Towing a house up a long steep grade.

And sucking down fuel on the highway faster than college freshman can suck down beer at his first off campus party.

I think they help alot on trucks with the auto trans pulling loads because they stay locked up in high gear and not shifting in and out of over drive. I won't have one behind a manual trans. This is my experience with both anyway.

As someone hinted at, 4:10 are best for tow with an auto transmission. I tow at 63-64 MPH at 2000 RPM which is right at the sweat spot for power and torque. Also you are running taller tires, which is another reason. If you have a freeway queen, you do not need them.

I would never trade mine.

I just had my entire rear end rebuilt and had the 3. 55's replaced with ..... 3. 55's! With 691,000 miles pulling loads on almost every road surface and terrain imaginable I would not change anything on my 6 spd truck. Once I added the Catcher and then Smarty I can cruise at any speed and have plenty of power without shifting much at all. I do agree with the way the 47re was designed to operate that 4. 10's would be better for towing. With the new 6 speed auto where the torque converter locks up in all the higher gears AND there are more gears I would go with the 3. 73 ratio.

Godspeed,
Trent

I have 3. 55 in my 01 and my bro-n-law had 4. 10 in his 02 both 6 speeds and at the time both bone stock, bothe with compareable trailers but I was about 2000lb heavier with our load we hit a hill about 75 mph and i droped to 70 I put it in 5th n held it there, but he could not shift down with his truck till he got back to 65 so he had to just lug it out in 6th and I pulled around him. 3. 55 rocks every day for me. 208,000 and counting.

I had a friend who was real unhappy with the 4;10 gears until he put larger tires on. I think he went with the 21 inch tires and rims (best I can remember) that are adveritsed all the time for these trucks. With the larger tires he was able to use the added torque and save a little fuel.

Again with the shorter legs of the od ratio of the 6 speed 4:10's are not good. BUT towing with an auto they are the way to go. With 3. 56's you would either be towing a warp speed or out of OD a lot.

One is not going to win a race up a hill against a truck with more gears available, as when you come out of OD to climb a hill, then 52-55 is a comfortable speed in 3rd. And in third you can climb the side of a mountain with a BIG load. If you want to listen to a busy engine, one can run quite a bit faster in 3rd, but why? At just under 20K combine, I am very happy with my setup.

I have thought about that exact gear myself... . does anybody have the 3. 73 gears and if so, what gear ratio did they change from????

I don't tow that often but when I do I would like a little more grunt from a stop light.

I've been thinking about changing my 3. 54's out myself for a set of 4. 10's. My 315 tires that measure just a hair over 34. 5" are probably a little bit too much for the 3. 54's. I really don't think I'd lose much mileage going down to the 4. 10's with as big as my tires are. And I know power would go way up with the lower gears. Just not wanting to lose mileage going down in gears.

I had my 4:10 rear rebuilt with 3:54s. Stock and empty with the 4:10, I got 18-20 mpg. Now with my current mods and the 3:54, I can get 24 mpg on the freeway and 18 around town.

we only drive in the city not to much freeway driving.

if I went back to the stock tires

that would give me more power?

are the 285/75/16 to big for around town?

when we had the stock tires on it and the road was wet the back tires would spin/slide vary easy.

but the stock tires did last a long time. as we drive the truck vary gentil

we want to get all the life out this truck as we can thats the name of the game

IMHO the only way to get your money out of a car or truck is to drive it out

make her last as long as you can

and smile as you drive passed the new car lot. and think shes payed for

no car payments

keeping her running may be a pain in the A-- some times but no car payments you got to love it:-laf

JayStraight,

IIRC the 3. 73's are the highest ratio one can order on the 3rd gen trucks. I also think the OD ratio of the 6 spd auto and possibly the manual also are higher than the 2nd gen trucks so 3. 73's are better suited in that case for towing. The 3. 73's were never offered as an option in 2nd gen trucks to my knowledge but the 3. 73 ring & pinion sets for the Dana 80 are available, also the 3. 31 if anyone is real brave!

Godspeed,
Trent

Please help...

Besides the year of my Truck 2001, Im running 2k RPM's @ 70MPH, could anyone please tell me what gears I may possibly have?

Thanks in advance...
