Why is the 3rd Gen such a dog on colder mornings?

I thought I would get another thread about this going as there are not enough as it is. :D I thought that this would be a good way to kinda separate some of the info on this. I'm wondering what the results of this TSB have been other than the possible increase in fuel mileage.

I had mine reflashed today, the first dealer I took it to about a week ago said they did it but I was suspicious so I went to a different one and I watched them do it, we'll have to wait and see about the mileage but the high idle feature works after this flash.

How do you get the high idle to engage? did it not work prior to the reflash? is the high idle only used in super cold regions??

:p

It didn't work before the reflash, with the truck running and in park turn the cruise on and hit set the idle will go to 100 rpm then if you hold accel down it will raise gradually to 1500 rpm.

OK, no flames or anything. But the reason I started this thread was to kinda get new info started in one place, not rehash the same stuff that has been posted seventy eleven times before about the same dang thing in thirteen other threads concerning fuel mileage. I had heard that this reflash helped with a slow speed start problem that some one had before the reflash, I have the same problem with my truck. I do not think I should have to power brake my truck (to get the boost to come up) just to get it to move out of it's own way. Heck, my ol' PSD had more get up and go off the line than this Cummins has.

Thanks for that info. I went to the dealer a couple of months ago to have this done and they were not able to do it. Hopefully this will change for those of us that have the auto's that were not able to get this feature.

By the way, you don't happen to have a brother that goes by RWoody on the diesel stop do you?

No, sure don't but there's probably a lot of us woodys runnin around, hahahahahah

How can I prove my dealer actually completed the TSB? Im not sure they did anything at all?

As I haven't had a TSB/reflash done to this truck yet I'm not sure but I would look for a sticker either on the core support or in the driver side door jamb that states the new calibration code.

HTH :)

Three things tipped me off, the mechanic wasn't with the truck 10 minutes and my overhead din't change a bit, and my high idle feature didn't work. I had read on another thread that the high idle would work after this flash but that's only on the automatics.

I think after having the new reflash done for the poor mileage you need to have them enable the high idle mode. We have great trucks but boy are they dumb. You need either the dealer or someone with a DRB tool to tell the 'puter to turn on that mode. I'm learning that almost anything electric or electronic needs to have some sort of dealer intervention. :{ :(

Might be best if a local club would go in and buy a DRB tool and farm it out to club members and locals that are not members.

I'm still debating this one also. I have an early build that is certainly eligible.

I do not have white smoke, hesitation, etc. Only thing could be a bit better mileage. I just KNOW my dealer will look at me like I have three heads unless I physically hand him the copy of the TSB, then I'm going to have to tell a little while lie - i. e. smoke, or something. If I give mileage as a reason, he'll just say - "they all do that'!

I just went out to my truck, started it up, turned on cruise control... nothing... hit the accel and still nothing... Did they just put a sticker on my truck and call it good or did they just omit the high idle option? They only worked on the truck for 30 min. I thought this was a 2 hour job? Anyone???

The high idle TSB is a completly seperate reprogram. The new TSB is to address mileage, white smoke and rough idle..... you need to ask for the other TSB to engage your high idle. It shoudn't take long at all... . They just plug in, hit a few buttons and your done..... should be covered under warranty..... I can't get it done on St. Louis yet becuase the mechanics are on strike..... So I have to wait until they go back to work

The truck must be in either park or neutral and do not step on the brake pedal. With the engine running, turn the cruise control on, then press "set". The engine should ramp up to 1100 RPM.

After that, pressing "accel" or "coast" will vary the engine speed between 1100 and 1500 RPM.

Cancel the fast idle by stepping on the brake pedal, pressing "cancel", or turning off the cruise control.

It must be another TSB. I just tried it again and nothing happened as far as the RPM.

Anyone know the TSB for the fast idle? :)

I think you have a definite problem. Did you check the turbo hose clamps? Something seems wrong here. With my 6 speed 600 I have to be careful (starting in 2nd) when turning a corner from a stop that I don't break the tires loose.
