Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting what bow for a youth?

I'm not a bow hunter but my 12 yr old grandson is wanting to get a compound bow. What should we be looking for? I'm clueless.

there are alot of variables involved in getting a bow for a youth. Check out archerytalk.com and you should be able to get all the answers you want.



I would start with a good used bow as he is going to grow in size and strength pretty quick in the next 5 years, plus if he ends up not liking archery than you are not out a lot of money (my current hunting set up is about $1200 with all accesories and arrows).



I would also suggestion taking him to a local pro shop (not Bass Pro, Cabelas or any other big box store) but to an actual archery pro shop. They will get him measured correctly and can likely help him with form (I've have been shooting since I was 12 and I am 36 now and still occasionally need help with my form, LOL). Plus they will likely have some bows that he can try out and get a feel for.

For learning to shoot, the Genesis is a good bow. We got one a while back. The neat thing about it is that my 11 year old, my 14 yo, my wife, and I can all shoot the same bow. It isn't for hunting, but you can learn the basics. It is not a toy.

Thanks for the suggestions. We'll definitely be paying the local archery shops a visit. He's already got some targets that he's making. Nothing like the patience of a 12 yr old.
