Got my old H1C sitting in the garage collecting dust. Its from my 89 the small non-intercooled version, 3" intake. What's this about swapping the compressor housing with a hx40 compressor housing or?

This was brought to my attention after jaynes was wanting a core to send off. What is the core value of this ? The exhaust housing is gone, its in Ohio. The 91 could use an upgrade, and if something good can be done to this old H1C, I would like to make use of it. Thanks.

Bill,

The compressor housing from an intercooled version of the H1C will fit as will one from a WH1C. You could couple that with one of several available upgrade compressor wheels from HTT and make a frankenturbo that from what I understand would be similar in performance to a modified HX-35.

That's basically what I will be doing when I get the time to put it all together.

But I'd like to hear other ideas as well.

Bill,

Check out HTT web site. It's a world of info. Then e-mail them with your questions. They are very helpful and... ... ... ..... believe it or not... ... ... ... ..... they will actually GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH YOU!!! Simply unheard of in todays age of technology.

For anyone else out there who needs some Turbo 101... ... ... HTT web site. It's the BOSS

The compressor wheels are different between the non intercooled version and the intercooled. The intake will fit from a intercooled to a non intercooled. But the fit to the wheel is loose. You will loose boost. The non intercooled intake will not fit a intercooled H1C. It hits the intake wheel.

I found out the interchange the hard way. I bought a H1C off of ebay a while back to replace the very loose H1C on my truck. The one I bought was a non intercooled version. My truck is intercooled. I switched out the intake side and lost 6 psi of boost. :{ With the old H1C I was making 20 PSI. With the new setup it was making 14 PSI. :{ :{ I now have Greenleaf's old H1C on my truck.

Yes. That is why you visit HTT's site and go shopping for a compressor wheel. :D

i just squeezed the compressor wheel off the 40 i was fooling around with last week into my h1c. you want an intercooled housing though so that you can cut the map width enhancement slot while your at it. took a bit of massaging to get the 58mm wheel into the 54mm hole, but it worked. boost hits HARD now!! and keeps pulling. if you want more info, let me know.

I appreciate everybodies input on this, but to tell you the truth, I am really in the dark when it comes to understanding well, visualizing 'massaging a 58mm wheel into a 54mm hole etc. Sounds like I need to tear into one and get to know it huh? Maybe take the old H1C apart and put it back together eh? I have a junkyard close by that has a old hx35-12w and a hx40-19nw I could get my hands on cheap, both would need rebuilt or could be used for parts. Time to get my hands dirty:D.

putting a larger wheel in requires machining the compressor housing and center section housing... not something you can do w/ a die grinder. need a good lathe setup.

i didn't have to do anything to the center section, forrest. i think that is only if you put a sixty in. i doubt a 40 in a junkyard is going to have one of those? i did have to cut the back of the wheel though. it was 1mm too tall. cutting the housing was pretty easy. just went straight through, 4mm larger, and then re-contoured it with a flap wheel on a die grinder while it was in the lathe (spinning of course). if you don't have access to a lathe yourself, i'm sure there is a machine shop somewhere near you that is run by some "older gentlemen" who would love to play around with something like that. if you get the HTT kit, you get a new housing and wheel, but you still have to cut the back plate.
