I am going to replace a clutch for a friend in his 98 12 valve. This truck has a #11 plate and is otherwise stock at around 100k miles. I'm going to try to talk him into a 13. 25 CON O clutch from SBC and a fully splined mainshaft. This truck runs a lot of miles with a trailer weighing 8k-15k lbs.

I know the updated fifth gear nut is a must but do you think he can get away with a stock clutch and mainshaft at that horsepower level towing? I did with my old 96 but I didn't pull it hard in fifth. TIA.

If a clutch is in the budget then do it as any more HP mods will make it slip. They always slip in 4th and 5th gear when the boost hits which happens a lot when towing

I don't see any more HP mods in the future of this rig. It took me a year to convince him to try the #11 plate. I'm still trying to talk him into the SBC and mainshaft.

at least get him to get the 13" clutch. . I did not and went through lots of clutches before I finally learned! you will too if pulling alot. as far as the full splined mainshaft, dont worry about that; just save up and do the 5600 conversion. . I did and love it! no more 5th gear problems!!!!!
