Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What causes white smoke?

I have a friend that has a 2001 5speed with a fueling box. He has a FASS fuel pump and has good fuel pressure. The truck will lose power and run terrible when towing and produce white smoke. The check engine light does not come on.



The problem happens only when towing heavy.



Any ideas on the problem? I think it may be the VP44 since it is making white smoke.

When my VP44 died it made a lot of white smoke. I also got 0216 code, which is a sure indication. My CEL never came on, but the codes were in there when I checked.
