I'm going to be getting my AAS degree in automotive technology next summer (I hope) from the Community College of Southern Nevada. I want to continue on and get a BS degree in automotive engineering. Right now I've got it narrorowed down to 2 colleges being Weber State and Ferris State.



Does anyone have experinces with these schools? Thanks.

Weber is in Utah, correct? Where is Ferris? You should probably be looking at schools in/around Michigan if you want to get in at the Big Three. Most of the guys from Visteon (split from Ford) I worked with when I was at AlliedSignal/Honeywell went to school back there.



Check out the Society of Automotive Engineers and see where there big campus/student chapters are - it ain't the West Coast.

Weber is in Ogden UT, Ferris is in Big Rapids MI . From what I understand Weber and Feris are the top 2 schools for automotive engineering.

I went to Ferris, never thought I would here somebody talking about it on here... .



I don't know anything about Weber State, but Ferris's programs are very highly regarded. Part of the reason they are so good is that they spend just as much time in the labs WORKING on stuff as they do talking about stuff in the lectures. Also, they have great support from the companies that hire out of there (not to mention that have some pretty up to date equipment you get to work on). Big Rapids is o. k. , not a tremendous amount of things to do, but if you like outdoor activities it has plenty of those. Grand Rapids is just about an hour or so south of there. GR will have your typical large city amenities. I had a couple of fraternity brothers (SAE) that were in the Auto Eng program, one was picked up by Roush BEFORE he graduated. Went to Livonia to work at the shop, got picked up by Roerhing (sp?) Engineering (used to run the #19 Pennzoil truck), and then was picked up by DEI to build motors for the #1 Steve Park car. I'm sure if you asked him, Ferris is the place to go. It's been 10 years since I was there for school, but visited last year and it was still the same place. HTH and Good luck with your decision

Me too, except is was Ferris State College when I went there (started in '69). Big Rapids was so small then that the phone system had 4-digit dialing. I got two certificates, one for Radio TV service (I'll bet they don't offer that one anymore) and one for Transmitter Service. Both were converted to ASS degrees after the fact. Since my experience there was so long ago, I cannot offer any advice about their current programs.

I went to Ferris State College in 1970 - Auto Tech. Back then it only cost $3-$4 for a ride to the Detroit area and back every weekend.



I hear now, that that's where the fairies go.



I have a nephew who's going to Ferris in the fall for Pharmacy, which is another thing Ferris is known for.

I also attended Ferris. Completed Heavy Equipment Service in 1968 and Trade Technical Teaching in 70. Came back in 73 will have 30 years teaching heavy equipment this coming spring.



The Auto program is good. There are a couple of options available. Let me know if I can answer any questions.



Hunting and fishing in Big Rapids are great. Big city pursuits are lacking.

i just finshed a B. A in heavy equipment in june. Ferris has great hands on programs. The auto department does a great job of keeping up to date equipment in there facility. they just finshed installing a new dyno room. i think you would very pleased with there programs. like others said there isnt much to do in big rapids. But we manged to entertain are selfs very well.

The avionics program is also history. There is an electronics program and a computer program offered by the same area that had radio & tv, avionics, etc.

I don't know how there automotive program but the area isn't that bad, I switched schools so I had to take some general classes that weren't all that impressive but I know they are rated as one of the best schools for your money.
