I was new to diesels when I decided to get one so I did a ton of online research. In fact that research is what led me to Dodgeram.org and here the TDR. I went to the local auto show that happen to be in town at the time as well. A few of the bigger things were first the powerband for the cummins was lower than the rest and your in it in normal driving. All that power and torque does not do you much good if you have to be turning 2500-2800rpms to get to it The fewer moving parts etc. The reputation. Then at the auto show when I looked under the hoods of them the chevy would be a nightmare to work on at least in 01 and the ford didnt look a whole lot better but was better than the chevy under there.

I too was leaning toward Ford. My dad had a first generation Ram and kept telling me I would be disappointed with the Ford and that the Cummins engine was superior. I wound up buying a second generation Dodge once they came out with the Club Cab and have never thought about buying anything else since.

Once upon a dark and storming... ... morning whilst walking to the UofM in Mizzoola, MT I would walk by this Ford F250. It was in the wee hours of the morning and the owner would have that truck warming up, obviously a diesel. So I had to stop and talk to him. It was an inline six conversion. My first exposure to diesel porn

Then it came to pass that I was at the corner gas station in Gardiner, MT and there was this Westech 1st gen truck with the big C wispering sweet nothings... music to my ears. The driver told me they were getting 20mpg. Hey! I wasn't getting any better with my Land Rover four banger.

The last straw was being at my folks place in Billings one Sunday. The Sunday car special section was a buzz about the new Gen 2 "big rig" design. What a centerfold. :D I had become a prevert... . a disgusting dieselphile. We would pass one on the highway and I'd rubberneck and tell the wife that there is a... ... "I know, I know,... its a Dodge Cummins. Whatever that is. " And I'd tell her that one day I was going to have one of those.

Finally, the day came when the junker Toyota SR5 pickup developed a knock. I knew I couldn't sell it to someone with a clean conscience. But trade it in at a dealer... . sure enuff. So one snowy slushy spring morning I drove over to Billings and came home with... ... . the rest is history.

As a child 6 years old I lived in the hills of Sand Mountain Ga. Very rural area. One spring morning In 1966 while Dad was making moonshine I heard this rumbling sound outside and went outside to find our neighbor turning (thats plowin for y'all city slickers) a large garden spot. In no time I was out standing on the side of the field and this wonderful machine getting closer to me. Not only did the tractor perform near miracles it had this odor I had never smelled before in my life. I spent hours walking behind the tractor barefoot in the freshly plowed soil. I never could understand why this man would not let me follow behind the bush-hog at this young age. The rest is history.

Really wanted a Ford F-350 4x4, but from repairing Powerstrokes (nearly) every day at work I knew it wasn't the engine for me. So I bought a Dodge... brand new... while an employee at a dealer who sold Ford trucks. Imagine how well that went over. :-laf

If I had to do it over, I'd drop a Cummins in a F-350 4x4. I love the engine, but the Dodge truck never impressed me.

The reason I went with the Cummins was actually the info from a dealer.

Wife and I were shopping for a new truck and we were looking at a new Dodge with the Hemi. She was against diesels for whatever reason.

We were looking for something to pull a future trailer with.

When the dealer told and showed us the advantage of the Cummins, she looked at me and said "maybe the diesel wouldnt be so bad after all".

I just smiled and said" OK".

The only regret I have is that I didnt get one sooner.

I have driven Chevys all my life. Wife and I decided we wanted a 5th wheel, so truck shopping we went. I wanted the truck before we got the trailer. I knew several people that had Ford diesels, but I was never a Ford fan. We ended up a the dealer and there was a Ford 250 and the Dodge Cummins sitting side by side. We decided to drive them both. The sales guy cranked up the Ford, it sounded like one of the old Chevys when the choke pull off was stuck on.  So we went for a ride. Drove it like it was stolen, it rode nice, but I was not impressed with the power. Back to get the Dodge, it fired right up, got in it, drove it, bought it and took it home. I have over 111K miles on it now, replaced the transmission, the VP44, and had the valves adjusted and the muffler and resonator removed. I cant imagine being without it. I dont care for the new ones, they are too quiet, I love the 02, nice and loud. I park underground and still roll the windows down to hear the noise. People jump to get out of the way. You think these things are loud above the ground, take one in a underground parking garage and hammer on it. Oo. Oo. Oo. I love my truck! :-laf :-laf

I too wanted a Dodge from the moment I saw the 94 models. Got my first 1/2 Ton in 98 and got a Cummins in 01. Funny thing happened though. Now I am obsesed with the late first gens. Looking back at how much I did not know... ... . It was allot. And the more I learn the more I realize I still dont.

As an acquaintance told me a couple of weeks ago, "I bought a Cummins diesel, it just happened to have Dodge wrapped around it". Says it all. as far as I am concerned.

Cummins... Are there other diesels built?

My family has owned a bunch of Dodge's and I have never owned anything but ('72 W-100 <318>, '79 W-100 <225-6>, '89 W-100 <3. 9 V-6>, '88 W-150 <318>, '75 W-200 <440>, '92 W-259 CTD, and currently '00 2500 CTD). Working for the USFS we have had all of the big 3 over the years and the one's that have always held up to the abuse the best have been the Dodge's. We recently recieved an '06 F-550 Powerstroke and while it is 200% better than the Chevy 3500 454 it replaced it can not hold a candle to the Cummins... ... ... .....

Also how long has Cummins been in business compared to the others?
