Your Exhaust

Have you ever had a turbo fail on your CTD?

i've heard through the grapevine...

that for best performance with lower egts that you can't beat the DD2's ;)

But I still voted for the DD3's ;)

Important part of this equation - Does he tow? If so how much? Does he want to upgrade his clutch? Or his auto (just throwing out ideas). Unfortunatly its not just "which" injector do I want, have to think about what you do with your truck and the "other" things different injectors will cause you to buy.

Just something to think about.....

I abstain from voting until this information is divulged.

I was just posing those questions to "everyone" to show its not just a "pick and choose" scenario. Not just for SKY but everyone reading this pondering an upgrade of this nature.

But since you answered those questions... ... which turbo is he running? The HY35 still? If so... bigger injectors he will have to address the turbo issue.

Kat's exactly right, the injectors are just the middle of the power equation. One needs to decide on what horsepower range is desired, choose the fueling mods to achieve that, then take care of the air flow issues; air box/air filter, turbo size, and then the other end - exhaust modification. The higher the HP, the more it costs to keep the EGT's in check. Other things to consider include tolerance for smoke (more fuel - more smoke in general at low boost levels), willingness to become one's own warranty station - the more BOMBs the more likely to be denied warranty work, and then of course is tolerating only getting 20K mile on a set of tires 'cause they keep melting away :D :D Best advice, drive some trucks with a variety of HP levels, then decide what you need/want (same thing right?).

SKY also has a 4". This poll is in conjuntion with HIS post a few days ago about what he should replace his 275's with.

He HAS another bout of the FEVER:eek:

Yes I know this was a spinoff of his post. However everyone that sees it can benifit from it if all of these valid points are brought up. He may have a 4" exhaust but he still has the HY35 9cm&sup2 housing (since noone has said different) so an injector upgrade will have to take into consideration the EGT's while towing.

Not only will this "post" help SKY, but it will help anyone at all whos reading thinking about what they would like to do. If he had a Y2K truck then he would have the 12cm² housing and could proably get away with the swap.

300hp (EZ and DDII's) + Hy35 = Not good towing combo. This would be a perfect scenario to try out Pier's new turbo tho, but that is another $695 added into the upgrade, which is the whole point of my postings on this thread.

LOL you guys are killing me

If I would have thought of the poll I would have done it my self, thank for looking after me shooter. :)

Yes that was actually going to be one of my questions... ... ... Turbo, I still have the "wieeenee" hy35, and right now I tow between Sept-June an average of 4000lbs cargo trailer over passes etc about 900 miles a week. And In the summer I tow my boat all over the place that is 3500lbs. So I dont tow really heavy but i can get my egt's to about 1000 degrees post turbo at about 70mph up a grade. So I only have about 200 degrees left to play with. I know I need to work on my EGT's because it take me awhile to get it down to 300 degrees, when I hear people saying theres goes right down quick, mine takes like 2 min. at an idle. So I am running hot, with the ez plugged in.

In 1000 miles "I am my own warranty station" so no issue there. I did go to piers site and look at that turbo. $700 MORE bones to shell out, plus install. I should give him a call, to see what a differance it will make for me. Does he even take a hy35 for core?

Um if your at 1000° post turbo how do you figure you have 200° to play with? Please tell me you were talking pre turbo numbers! If not, then you already have a problem. What boost levels do you run?

Piers Turbo Review

Piers Turbo Info

Pier's Diesel Research Website

I would suggest reading those threads, and then of course calling Piers to see what he can do for you. I do not know if he takes the HY35 for core or not... its $150 core charge.

The last part of your post about adding "cost" to this upgrade was my whole point I was trying to point out to everyone reading.

No Im talking post Turbo. Correct me if im wrong, you dont want to go above 1350 preturbo right?? And you add about 200 if your post turbo? So that brings me to 1200 degrees, so I guess 150 not 200 for play??? Just running on the flat my egts are at 650-700.

Usually you add 300° to a post turbo reading. But thats just it, it is only a "guess". Whats your boost level at that temp reading? But yes 1300° is the typical number for preturbo. Have you modified your wastegate at all to run a lil higher boost? If not. . that will lower EGT's right there.

Your already at your limit, change injectors you have to change the turbo. Edit : or modify it in someway. Usually just as easy to swap it out.

1000 post ----OUCH!!!!!

That is 900 post turbo, 1250-1300 pre turbo

Are you running a turnbuckle on the waste gate or 22 shell in the hard line????? to bring up boost ?????

Call Piers>>>>>>>> he has an upgrade for the HY turbo also.

Davd F. and others have posted that the 9cm HY single inlet flows as well as the dual inlet HX w/ 12cm housing.
