Muddymess, this is a thorny issue.

To my knowledge every single person who has paid for an ATS TC & VB, or an ATS trans is absolutely certain it is better than any other Trans.

And to my knowledge every single person who has paid for any OTHER Trans is equally certain IT is the best one out there. Hence my advice to contact all the Trans Vendors and speak with them.

I do believe that DTT will not sell just a TC & Valve Body, somehow their system can't do that, but with the ATS system you CAN go with the TripleLok TC and Valve Body and be just fine.

The War's Looming........

I might as well jump in with my support of DTT (Diesel Transmission Technologies). Although I'm a little out of the loop:

Bill Kondolay is THE genius of Dodge auto's. We haven't heard anything from him lately, primarily because he's not so politically correct (kicked-out). (Also, many of the heavy hitters using his stuff, have also drifted away from the TDR). You owe it to yourself to call call him, and discuss what he's doing for the 48RE's (I haven't heard what he offers for this transmission). You'll probably notice his blunt-ness, but he surely knows his stuff, and his service is second to none.

The primary difference between the two vendors:

ATS uses a heavy-duty lock-up system that sends the power right thru (efficient). Two of the big problems are increased line pressures (seal failures?), and the potential to destroy other, not-so-easily replaced (weaker) components in the transmission.

Bill's system actually unlocks the TC clutch. He uses a highly efficent torque converter, so the power is sent thru. However, if something is to give, the philosiphy is to use the fluid as the breaking point, rather than the internal parts of the transmission.

Since I went to the 6-speed, I honestly haven't been following the progress of either very much. You may want to check out the 2nd generation forums (try searching by Stephan Kondolay). The ATS's have become very popular, so obviously they're doing OK. But at least check with DTT for comparison. Let us know what you find (what Bill is doing).

Thank you for that explanation of the two TQ conv. 's.

Reading that I would think the ATS would be better for exhaust braking if it is locked up. Is that correct?

well let me say this then... .

What do i need to do to my 48re to handle 500 rwhp being launches at a 1/4 dragstrip at full boost almost every weekend of the summer, being able to handle getting a little silly to show it off, making my friends camaro look slow, etc. And i dont want parts breaking every month either.

Maybe that clears things up:cool:

Maybe I should clarify,

Bill's does go into lock-up, just not as violently. And his will un-lock when certain conditions are met, to prevent damage.

As I mentioned, it has been a while since I've studied. He was working on the "next-generation", so maybe things have been further improved. When you call them (Bill or Stephan), ask what they do whan an exhaust brake is going to be used. (Just don't be offended if they say it's not a good idea with the auto).

You could also check their (& other) websites to get current.

Again, please post your findings (in an objective way), so we can learn.

I am only going to say what has worked well for me. I don't have 500 rwhp ( I should be at 340 rwhp ) and have been very happy with my DTT setup. I only have a TC and valve body and I think 1 extra disk in the clutch packs. I usually run at about 290-300 rwhp and have been doing so for the last 75K miles. I have 111K on the truck right now. I do not baby the truck. When I did have a problem both DTT and Massdiesel came to the rescue. They both go out of their way to help you. The problem was Dodge related and nothing to do with the modifications. A small u-shaped clip was bent and that was causing the problems. The clip usually breaks and is a problem in higher mileage trannys. Maybe a high strength clip is needed ( aftermarket) ? My truck has the 47re so I can't comment on the 48re but I did want you to know my DTT setup has worked very well for me and would do business again with DTT without blinking an eye.
