Well, I have been redoing this poor poor truck I bought out in the woods and once bone stock. I just got done pulling the trans. for fully splined mainshaft, new syncro kit, new bearings and such and also upgrade to a SB 13 Con FE and it looks like the rear main has been leaking pretty good.

So do I need to pull the flywheel housing that bolts to the back of the block??? Everything is pulled already: transmission and bellhousing, clutch, & flywheel.

I appreciate anyones help,

JD

Just drill a small hole in the metal part of the seal and start a screw in it. Grab the screw with vise grips and pull it out. No need to remove that big aluminum piece. The new seal (from Cummins anyway) will come with a plastic deal to start the seal and a steel ring to tap it in with that insure the proper depth. It's really easy.

SRadke, JD is talking about the rear main seal, not the front seal. I don't think it's quite that simple. . . but I'm afraid I don't know the R&R instructions to do it correctly. Some engines you have to loosen some of the main bearing bolts so the crank can drop a bit so you can push out the old seal and push in the new one (2-piece seal). If there is no flange on the end of the crankshaft where the flywheel bolts then it's probably a single piece seal.

Actually Vaughn, it is taht easy. I've done about 5 rears and two fronts and all of the rears were easier than the fronts. Both of them fought me for some reason.
