so fare I have a banks intercooler setup (thanks to crewcabdiesel) I am going to use the pump of the 89 what mods should I do to the pump when I have it rebuilt

what injectors should I use going the the other post I am looking at the old blue spiecals or the lucas

and I was talking to enterprise eng. about a replace mant cam not not sure if I want to spend $670 on it or get a brake insted

I will be running singal 4 or 5 inch stack out the bed athanks George

Here's what should get you 250HP and live...

Put in PW injectors, change timing to 1. 4 to 1. 45.

experiment with timing - advancing up to 1. 6 or 1. 7 may work in some situations.

Turn up pump 15% from stock (1 round, maybe up to 2) from stock fuel setting. Lucas injectors, some less.

increase governed speed from 2500 (this is the point just before fuel begins to cut off, not the max speed the engine will go no-load) to at least 2700 or 2800. May require internal parts change or adjustment on the pump.

14cm2 exhaust housing on hx35 or non-wastegate 16. (should have larger pipes of 2nd gen turbo, maybe?).

Intercooler (you have, right?).

Bigger cross-flow radiator.

at least 3. 5 inch free-flowing exhaust.

psychotty air or similar high-flowing filter system.

That should get you there.

OOOOPPPSSSSS, forgot the biggie...

Later head. you can use a ReCon, if need be, but the earlier ones had some cracking issues under high heat and load. -- in other words, the 92 head.

Power wagon

How close to 250 can i get without risk of the Head failures you mentioned I have a 1990. planning many upgrades in the post "past the point of no return"?

Thanks Jim Johnson

250 HP

my old 93' made 251 rear wheel horse... . with Power wagon injectors, full power screw turned in 5 turns, plunger and starwheel turned 3 clockwise, custom air intake,4'' exhaust... . but i's dangerous for the VE pump to b up that high... so consider 230 hp max for a safe range:(

I didn't say 250 HP at the wheels :)

Follow this:

stock = 160HP.

Add PW injectors. 190HP

Turn 400 RPM faster =220HP

15% fuel = 250HP.

All the other stuff is to keep it cool and/or time it for better use of the fuel.

It shouldn't smoke very much, and with the 16 housing, it should stay pretty clean up to governor cutoff. Pump should be calibrated for stock, and only the fuel screw turned up, no other calibration changes. Timing is an "install" type of change, in my view, not a pump calibration, although you can set it off the truck.

If it were mine, I'd run a little slower, use a 12 or 14 housing, and crank a bit more fuel than the above. But that's my preferences... Low smoke and good economy.

This should make about 200-210 HP at the rear wheels with a manual transmission. It'll also whip any PSD below 250 HP and some above.

Not sure. just keep the EGT down and you should be ok... The early injectors flow good, so you can just crank the pump up.

use whatever combination of exhaust housing and intercooler and fuel level that will keep your exhaust temperatures well below danger.

Thanks guys

I use to think I knew a fair amount about the truck I have been driving for 3. 5 years. I know now how much I need to learn. Thanks everyone this forum is great. Feeling alittle saturated right now. I have been printing post for the best part of an hour.

Sorry Mark... i must be hanging around the Bombers too much lately,i keep thinkin' REAR WHEEL REAR WHEEL REAR WHEEL... TORQUE TORQUE TORQUE. . LOL:p

Power Wagon....

Wouldn't you want 83 Crewcab to use the 92 pump. . The 89-90 VE's don't flow as much fuel as the new pumps, least thats what I have gathered. Comments????

Courious..

I THINK... Not sure about this. . . but I think your 89 pump can be recalibrated to at least work well, if not be perfectly spec'd out the same, as the '92 pump.

Yes, the early pumps are lower fuel settings, but that was because the injectors had far less fuel restriction.

Put in some of those "lucas" smokers and run the '89 pump as it is. Won't be calibrated to any specific horsepower, but it should run pretty good.

thanks guys going to pick up the rebuild kit friday $416 not bad from Engine Rebuilers Supply Columbus Ohio 1-800-334-5191 includes ring bearing frezze plugs gaskets and all seals

and picking up the head from them to from beaing welded a little more than they said $460 ouch had a crack in the intake pluname

hay were can I get the lucas smokers at and any Ideal on price thanks for all your help George

I've got 239. 6 hp at the wheels on a dyno with the stuff in the signature. I don't have ANY EGT problems with that set up, even towing with my foot on the floor. I now have installed a 12 cm2 housing and will dyno with that combo in a few weeks. At those settings I saw no more that 900* pre turbo on the dyno. Only 1. 5-1. 75 turns of the power screw and the diaphram turned 90*. I would look up Big Don for any injectors. He has posted his info in a post with his name for people to search.
