I didn't know Cat made a 34 horse diesel. Is it a 3-banger?

They were marketing either Detroit or Perkins small displacement diesels with a CAT logo.

Hey Vaughn, how does that compare to the 'ol Briggs diesel :D

Briggs & Scrap-Iron was marketing a range of Daihatsu engines. Many years ago they bought Lombardini, who made single cylinder diesels, but they are long gone.

I have to disagree on Hustler being the "best non greens mower," but Ferris has been using the Cat for a year or longer and I have not heard of any complaints. Most of the diesel powered mowers use the Diahtsu/Briggs (Exmark, Gravely) engine while some use the Yanmar (Turbo charged on the Dixie Chopper). In my opinion the Kubota diesel is the best but I don't like their mower.

No doubt Hustler is a top of the line mower but the 15k price tag for that thing is a little steep.

I think it is too coool! That radiator would make a Cat skid steer jealous! :--) Around here they are $13,500. That is why I will be getting a Hustler Z with 25HP Kawasaki instead. ($7500) I here the same thing about it being a Perkins. I got no problem with that though. I may have to try one out for giggles when I pick mine up! :D
