Hello fellas,I am a 3ger. Now dont hold it against me,who came over from super duty land not too long ago. I have a chance to buy a '91 2500 dually utility bed with C. T. D. and 5 speed. It has about 200K on the clock with a new clutch, and has had regular maintenance. It is a clean, clean truck. The asking price is $3,700. 00 any thing i need to look for as far as "secrets" i dont know much about the 12 valvers. Thanks for any help.

definitely worth a look

Welcome to 1stGenLand! Right off the bat I'd say that ANY 1st gen under $4k is worth a look... ANY. If it runs smooth, doesn't make a huge death cloud, and is clean then it's probably worth every bit of $3700. The transmission will probably need a thorough checkout, but the price is right - my opinion.

Any questions about the rig just ask away -

Thanks for the reply Sam. I kinda thought the same thing as far as price, just didnt know if there were any specific problems to look for,im heading over now to look at it again,i will let you know how she checks out. i sure would like to see those toys you have listed in your sig! thanks a bunch. Mark.

If that truck still has the 250 axle under it. It most likely has about 3/4" of spacer or washers between the inner dual and the brake drum. So ask or check by pulling a set of duals off.

srw

Sorry guys,my bad. Truck is a SRW 2500. Drives out real nice,'cept that darn limiter/governor comes on too quick for my tastes. Truck has a pyro and boost gauges too. Michelins for rubber. How are the brakes to R@R for the shadetree mechanic?Thank. Mark.

Brakes are easy, especially the fronts, sounds like a great price! You just might get attached to this truck... Patrick.

At that price I could almost justify it for spare parts! No where to park it though.

You can park it my front yard. I have plenty of room for spare parts trucks, esp if they are newer and have better parts than mine.

Rear brakes are a problem on some of them. Either I really sucked bleeding mine this time round, or I need a ABS valve. I've bought 2 of them with 200K+ on them, and have had a few problems, some small, some not so small. Governing out fast probably means 4. 10 gears- 80 will be your top unless you bump the governor a little, then you can go 83. If the transmission doesnt make any noises while driving or pulling, and if it runs out smoothly, go for it. THe transmission may growl a little at low RPMs under medium to heavy throttle- that's normal- keep RPMs up to alleviate that. Injector pumps are somewhat unpredictable- talked to guy in a Bosch shop, and he's seen them with 500K+ need nothing more than a seal kit; others shot at 45K. Transmissions seem to be the same way. Mine has about 200K on it, and will last me another 30K to 300K; then should be time to look for a NV4500 or an Eaton 7 speed OD. But one good thing about hard run trucks is that you can normally get them for a song, and they produce EXCELLENT reasons to BOMB, er, um, ah, uh, I mean..... um, upgrade replacements. :) :D Yeah, that's what I meant.

Daniel

PS- keep in mind the engine alone is worth about $2500-3000 as a used takeout.

yeah - bueno price

yeah - if that price is right you could build a nice little simple garage to put it in and still be ahead!

The guys are right - can't really go wrong on this one.

Fencebuilder:

Come back, come back to your roots. I just spoke with my insurance agent about what I could expect for settlement if I were to get in a wreck and they totalled my truck. $4900 to $6900, based on condition. At the price you are talking, buy it.

Daniel:

Do yourself a favor my friend. Replace the RWAL valve. I've been fighting with a spongy pedal since my disk conversion, just replaced the valve after not being able to get fluid to the rear calipers on the last bleeding attempt (using a pressure bleeder, no less). New valve, NAPA ($116, $35 Core). Brakes? HELL YES:D

The Cummins B series 5. 9Liter engines around Ohio (salvage yards with cores included in price) are $3500. If you can buy a truck for that price, it would definately be worth it. Is ti 2 or 4 wheel drive?

Thats good info to know. I guess i can justify it. It is a 2 wd.

I did it!

Well, did a litlle haggling with the owner, got him to take $3,500. 00. I also got a folder full of records, and a fifth wheel set-up too!He was the original owner. Truck has been serviced by a reputable diesel tech in this area,Ken Imler if anyone cares to know. I think i done good on this one. Thanks for the input fellas!;)

...once you go down the Dark path....

The Dark Path will lead you to even darker clouds of #2 doom and dark tire tracks of power - forever will it control your destiny..... luminous beams of light behind you trying to break through the exhausting cloud of gasoline doom as repeated evidence of the mighty power of the Cummins - cars and lesser trucks dare to see what just blew them away... people hearing the power and shrill of turbo bliss... children run away in fear... . but those who 'know' simply stroll up to witness the impenting path of accelleration as only can be given by Mother - Pastor Bob seen in the distance reading from the holy Manual of Service as he blesses your new steed... . and you, knowing now, that the path to glory does indeed have not eight, but six stones perfectly matched, one in front of the other, along a single line, verses two separated lines, not quite complete, and two stones too many per side. Indeed, you have chosen a path that will lead to greatness and repeated muscle aches on your face, as the beautiful Mother of Acceleration can do nothing... but make you smile :D

Oh yeah... gauges for a baseline are a must... but you'll want ones that have a broad range because you'll soon peg the needles... . and you'll want to get the Blessed Manual of Service... the Good Book.

Can I get an AMEN from the congregtation! Let me hear it from the people - Those among us that have seen the (black) Light gimme a big AMEN for the new Brother, coming to be among the greatness that is...

... the T - D - R !

... Double shot of #2 comin' right up!
