I like the old pump because it is lubricated by engine oil and not dependent on the lubricity of the diesel fuel to keep it alive. The P7100 trucks can run a lot of alternative fuels with no problems at all, even lists them in the manual. To do the same with a VP truck you will have to put in additives for lube purposes or risk spanking the pump.

I am surprised by the economy numbers posted in this thread. If you look back over the last few years of threads, there have been a LOT of threads on fuel mileage and in general the electronically-controlled pump trucks were reported to get poorer fuel mileage. The 1st gens are the mileage kings, and the newer trucks fall more or less linearly behind them due to the increases in stock horsepower over the years.

If you make a habit of messing with John Law or space aliens, on a VP truck their EMP weapons can shut you down quick. On a P7100 truck, as long as you have taken a moment to ensure the fuel shutoff solenoid is held open you can laugh at the EMP pulse and cruise onward. :D This can also be a very useful feature in the event of nuclear war, should the missiles ever be launched in the World Petroleum Wars following massive shortages of oil due to VP-pump trucks' poor mileage, the P7100 pump trucks will still be functional to tour the smoking, desolate aftermath. And we'd get good mileage all the way, too! :D :D ;)

You also have to rember the VP44 milage is only going to be as good as the condition of it's many electrial sensors. Keep the electrical sensors in good condition and with a mild set of injetors (275's worked good for me) and a VP will yield some awesome milage. The P-pumps are nice but give me a VP for dailing driving any day. :)

Oh yea! My dad can beat up your dad too. :D

I've had both - a '91, and the current '02 - and in my case at least, NO comparison in obtainable MPG or power - best I could do with the '91 was typically 21 MPG - I can easily get 24 MPG with the '02 driving the new truck at the same speed over the same route - and when I choose to stab the go pedal, again, no comparison. Another evidence of the more efficient operation of the new truck, is thaat the oil stays FAR cleaner FAR longer thaan the '91 - less soot from inefficient combustion. The old truck was great, and I loved it - but for economy, power and overall comfort and efficiency, it's the '02, hands down!

There are may advantages with a vp44. But only if you can mess with the proprietary code. After mods my 12v gets better mileage even though it is a 4x4. And doesn't scare me on long trips.
