I recently replaced the ECM on my truck and Cummins programmed it after asking for my engine serial #. I am wondering what program they would use. Would it be the most current or the one my engine came with originally?

It was downloaded the newest version of your calibration. calibrations are usually time dated so you can't download the same old cal, you get the newest and greatest.

cost of ecm

I am very curious as to why a person needs to replace the ECM.

Also can you let us know how much a ECM costs? Thanks

Ecm's are electronic, they aren't foolproof. just like a computer over time , with the heat under the hood they'll develop problems. On the bigger engines they are attached to a cooler plate , which fuel runs through that cools the electronic down. As far as the price 700-900 or more.

Another stupid question

Is it possible that by changing out the ECM from a truck that was making better mileage than what I make, that my mileage would improve? Could it have anything to do with fueling? I met a fellow that has a 1999 and he makes 19 mpg. I make 10 to 12. I know that he has different configurations as far as drive train is concerned, But to make 8 to 10 mpg difference!!! I have tried many things in the last couple years to try to increase my mileage, to no avail. Such as cleaning and replacing the IAT sensor, replacing the map sensor, tightening the clamps on the boost system, adjusting the valves, keeping new fuel filters in place, etc, etc. Maybe if I found a wrecked truck with a good ECM I could try it. Whatyathink?

Ok, well unless I am missing something here the trucks ECM should defuel when boost exceeds 21 psi or something close to that right? Well, I have posted several times and I have been having trouble with surging and the dealer said I had a bad ECM so I replaced it with one I bought from Cummins which cost $1150 after they flashed it for $250. Tonight I totally romoved the Powermax2 and all of it's wiring since I am trying to find out why it is getting surges of fuel and wanted to eliminate that as a possibility. I still have in my DD stage III injectors but the truck is otherwise stock except the waste gate doesn't open until it hits 44psi. I expected my truck to do something strange when I hit 21 psi of boost but it did absolutely nothing unusual. It just kept climbing and topped out at 32 PSI of boost. First of all I was surprised that just the injectors would build that much, but secondly I couldn't understand why the ECM didn't mind it going that high.
