You left out a few parameters like are you pulling anything at 2200, flat ground, hills, are you just reving it? I will assume at 2200 will get you atleast 70 mph, I do 70 at 2000 RPM, anyway that should put you around 600-800 degrees F. You are a dully so you weigh a bit more than I. I think someone recently said their dully weighed in at 7880 #s I only weigh 6200, my @ 70 MPH EGT is 600 just simply cruising on flat ground. At a quarter throttle I can see 1000 easily. Hope something here helps

Flat ground, no load with OD off. The truck has 4. 10 gears. The problem that I have is that the EGT used to react very quick and go to 0 when idling. The gauge was intermittent and then stop working. I put a new gauge in and now under normal driving it ranges from 300° to 600° with it being 70° - 75° outside. I was just wondering if there is anything wrong with the truck.

EGT

300-600 is ok. My 01. 5 2500 4x4 QC I run about 650- 750 @ 80MPH empty and flat ground. I really have to stand on it, like having to have to merge quickly on the highway to get it above 900. I have my EGT warning light on my guage set at 1150 and have tried acouple of times to get it to set off but have not been able too.

I have no mods though, other than a Scotty Air II, which actually helps keep the EGT down. I know this is kinda apples and oranges but I still think that your 300-600 if fine.

Mine has never shown 0 though, must be a bad gauge u had, mine will always show the exhaust manifold temp with the key on.

Hope I helped.

Onesloryd,

300 sounds out to lunch unless you are at idle. The only way I can get less than 500 is to drive down a very long hill. I would suspect your thermal probe. You have not said whether you have a pre-turbo or post-turbo probe. Mine is pre-turbo. If you still have low numbers as you state I would consider calling GENO's or someone else and get a new probe. Like I said if my truck is moving under it's own power I am atleast 400 degrees and that is without trying to accelerate. It would be like being in 3rd and holding speed say 30 MPH.

AKoperdak,

I set the probe pre-turbo in the center of the rear runner and also at the mid point of the port. As I accelerate from a stop it goes right up to 600°F. The first gauge went from 0° - 300°. I just want to make sure everything is OK. I guess my first gauge was the bad one which is kind of scary.

Anyways what brand of pyrometer have you guys found to be the best and most accurate?

Thanks

Matt

I use a VDO gauge and am happy with it so far. I do have it post turbo, about 3"-4" out of the turbo. How does this compare to pre turbo temps? Will it get the same readings only slower, or should I move it to the pre turbo side.

Steve

I have Westach gauges. I use the Pyro/boost combo and a seperate fuel pres gauge. I have them mounted on the A-pillar.

I like pre-turbo as it reflects more accurately (IMHO) the temps the engine is seeing. Post-turbo is slower to reflect change and reads lower in temps but... . it reads a higher temp on the cooldown cycle as the mass of the turbo takes time to cooldown. It is a matter of what you like I guess.

Just a thought,,

0*F is well below freezing. You'd have snow coming out your tailpipe at that EGT. .

800* is normal EGT for no load, highway cruising.

300* in 70*F ish weather sounds about right for idling.

Mcummins,

800 is high for a 3/4 ton but not a dully like yourself. I run 550 degrees F while cruising at 65 MPH... I hit 600 when running at 70 MPH. I weigh significantly less than a 3500 ... I am just 6200 pounds when full of fuel and no driver.
