I have a 2006 3500 2WD, DRW. Its time to change the fluid in the rear end but my manual does not specify what to use (or at least I could not find it).

What do I need and how much?

PS this has probaby been asked before but I could not find it.

Correction, I did find the fluid type recommended. GL-5 SAE 75W-90 Synthetic.

But I still don't know how much is needed.

I went to the mag-hytek ( I don't have a mag-hytek cover, just thinking about it) web site and using their info I found that I have and 11. 5 inch rear end.

PS. If you happen to know how much fluid you need for the Auto Trans (48RE)

I need that too.

Joe, I am thinking 7. 5 quarts with the Mag-Hytec rear and 17 quarts with the Mag hytec trans pan...

Hope that helps...

Bill

Thanks for the input. I added a little confusion when I mentioned Mag-Hytec. I don't have either on my truck (just wishing). Doth my trans and Rear end are standard.

4 qts. will fill it with a little left over if you have the stock cover. Personally, I use Amsoil Severe Gear.

It depends on milage. Every 30K for hauling and towing. I think its 100K or better for light service. I don't have the manual handy, so I could be off, but its way high for light duty.

I fould this reference by KWG to Xtreme Diesel in another post.

So, the answere to my own question, my 11. 5 rear end ( guess mine is a trac-Rite since it is a limited slip)

11. 5 AA Open Rear... ... ... . 8. 9 pints

11. 5 AA Trac-Rite Rear... ... ... . 8. 4 pints

My 48RE transmission

Initial Fill... ... ... . 4. 0 quarts

Total Fill... ... ... . 17. 0 quarts

Oh, I will. Laying on gravel in 90 degree heat and spilling oil over myself and everything else is always great fun! I just can't wait to get started.
