CP-3 (Injector Pump) Replacement Poll

I add one quart of additive per tank. Using 12 oz. of Marvel Mystery with 20 oz. of Power Service comes out to a nice even quart. I buy the PS (white or grey depending on the season), and mix 36 oz MM with 60 oz of PS, and it just fills the 96 oz jug, gives the mixture I'm looking for. Yeah, I probably dose it a little heavier than necessary, but $2-$3 extra per fillup I consider to be a good return in investment for a little extra safety margin... especially considering all the injector/fuel system failures due to "bad fuel".

Have you tried an additive that increases cetane since adding the Rokktech mod? Higher, not lower, cetane will help rattle or "ping," and by adding it you're not going to make a significant impact on "timing. " It'll smooth combustion and help economy & power a skosh. I had the Bully Box on my '03 which advanced timing & increased the tinny rattle. Putting in cetane boost helped reduce the rattle.

I can tell a difference just running a fuel that is 42 cetane and not 40... 42 cetane definately makes it rattle more...

And, not saying you are wrong, I'm just going by what the Rokktech instructions stated... and my experience tends to agree with their statement...

Maybe I'll try throwing a bottle of additive with cetane boost in and see what happens... but it is a moot point as the Howe's works just fine IMO...

I ran MMO a couple times an it really works nice, but I quit running it for fear I would get questions if the fuel had even the slightest red tint to it... I have been dipped several times in my travels... taht is the only reason I don't use MMO...

MMO does not contain the red dye that denotes off road fuel.

While it might not, I'm not taking the chance some rookie might give me a bad time about the color of my fuel...

Not worth the potential headache...

Valvoline Syn Power

Valvoline Syn Power, the only cleaner/lube that Cummins recommends and sells. Had a rough idle that a fuel filter full of Sea Foam cured. Been adding 3. 2 oz. of Valvoline Syn Power to every 25 gal. of fuel (25 gal = fill up from about 1/4 tank level) and no recurrance of the rough idle yet!

Wow! There were actually a few surprises in there. I expected Power Service to come out on top, but not with almost 40% of the vote and 14 points over Stanadyne. I also expected Howes to do a little better and was very surprised that less than 7% don't use any additive at all. I'm in that less than 7% group. But what surprised me the most was the number of people who say that they use Marvel's Mystery Oil. Before the poll I don't think I ever knew of someone who bought it, even once. Another minor surprise was the number of people who used an additive outside the PS/Stanadyne/Howes group. Some of those I hadn't heard of until now. I just bought a bottle of Power Service in the grey bottle for injector cleaning, and will split that between the next two fill-ups. I guess I'm getting on the additive bus, at least on a semi-regular basis.

16oz Power Service and 4oz of MMO since the second tank. Never a problem at 48K. Long Trips I premix and bring it along.

Stanadyne has their new formula out for ULSDF. I have been testing with it and without it. Used the same fuel source. Without fuel additive I found higher EGT's 800-900. With Stanadyne ULSDF formulation I found EGT's to run 600-780. There also was white smoke without the additive. The smoke was gone with the additive. The only thing I can think of why this was happening was (lower cetane). Cetane makes diesel burn faster with a higher cetane number. So lower cetane would cause an effect of the diesel may not be completing it's burn when the exhaust cycle starts. The fuel burns as it leaves the engine. This creates higher EGT's and also white smoke as the fuel/air cools as it travels down the exhaust system. By putting in the Stanadyne ULSDF additive it cures this problem. You all should do your own testing and report back, as diesel in different areas of the country could be different. Thanks, Brady

I agree higher cetane number should result in more complete combustion, but I'm not convinced it's due to a higher burning rate. The effect of increasing cetane number on delay angle (and, consequently, rate of pressure rise), in my opinion, effectively creates a longer 2nd phase of combustion (period of rapid combustion). This, in turn, results in a shorter 3rd phase (from maximum pressure to completion of combustion).

At a given RPM, then, the net result is more complete combustion when the exhaust stroke begins.

I haven't seen (or don't remember seeing) figures indicating burning rate as a function of cetane number. Do you have anything I could read on the subject?

Regarding the topic of this poll, I'm not surprised PS is #1 - I think it's the most easily available for most people.

Anyone have a special container to use when adding to fuel tank I am looking for a graduated type bottle with a long neck for easy pouring into tank filller

Thanks, Bill

I got some camping fuel bottles at a sporting goods store and pre fill them with my additive. They're made for use with fuel and I can empty them out completely into the tank. I've never had one leak (knock on wood).

Hey, that's a great idea!!!

I have one for my kerosene lantern, never thought about it for additives...

I voted for Power Service because that's what I buy when I need an additive. However, all my fuel gets delivered with Power STROKER already mixed in. I've never been able to find anything about Power Stroker other than what my fuel guy tells me.

I like Howe's, but it too high priced. Stanadyne doesn't exist around here, wouldn't know where to get it other than order it online. MMO has a nice pretty red bottle.

I use a Lucas bottle. Nice to pour out of and is see thru and graduated.

ALL diesel fuel in MN is 2% biodiesel, including home heating oil. I don't worry about lubricity anymore.

Not that it matters for the pre-07 trucks, but I just bought a bottle of MMO for the outback and it had a sticker stating MMO was NOT compliant for use in 2007+ diesels.

Stanadyne where to Buy

Anyone have a good place to buy Stanadyne at a discounted price I just paid 182 bucks for 3 gals (6 -1/2 gal bottles). Would like to find a less expensive source

Thanks Bill

food for thought

i just bought my first bottle of additives today after reading all the post about how bad the ulsd sux but when i went down to my local diesel mechanic shop and picked me up a bottle of stanadyne and we conversated for a few mins about different additives and thats when he reached down and grabbed an injection pump and stanadyne was the manufactor of a line of injections pumps. so i found this to be very interesting
