Diesel Mechanic Quiz........

new used Massey Ferguson

Ok guys... got one for ya...

Here is what happens when you shift from 6th gear to 1st gear in a fully loaded Cat 793 mining truck!!. .

Note the fact that the main caps are still on the crankshaft and bolted to the upper main web of the cylinder block. . !!! Looks like the cylinder block and the crankshaft got a divorce and the crankshaft took most of the cylinder blocks belongings!!!.

I bet the operators cab had a funny smell in it!!

Here are a few more. .

In the 1st photo here, you can see that all the main webs of the cylinder block are missing, the last photo shows the fact that the rear housing is gone except for one camshaft cover

i do not know for sure, these pics were sent to me by a friend as I do not work on the machine side. I would think they could purchase a new engine for around 200-225K...

Doesnt appear there is anything left for any sort of core credit, so the idea of purchasing a Reman is pretty much out of the question.

Core credit??? From CAT??? On that???

That's funny..... :D

You could try it by the 5 gallon pail full... ... ... ...

Operational damage clause isn't gonna' cut it on that one.

Seriously, I am surprised as thorough as CAT usually is that there is not some kind of pressure limiter to prevent an unintentional downshift.

With a solid powertrain connection and a loaded truck pushing it that motor didn't stand a chance against a 5 gear downshift.....

Mike. :)

Holy crap!!!

Easily a quarter million or more when you factor in other things that got torn up, and cost of downtime may equal that or more.

Wingate, speaking of downtime and engine carnage, how are the 6. 7L Fords doing now?? :-laf

For some reason I thought those big mine trucks used a generator and unit motors at the wheels. Thats a mess. I wonder what the RPM was at explosion time!

BOOM !!!! Used to work on these trucks in AZ. Never seen carnage this bad but I have seen them windmill the blocks out on one or two holes. The worst I saw was a haul truck break a frame in half at the hoist cyl. while dumping. Front of the bed came down and set on the horse collar above the engine just missing the cab. Bet the driver had to change his shorts after this though...

I have seen worst damage than this Cat 793 Haul truck.

I use to design Large Mining Shovels for Cat in Joliet and Decatur IL. Than went back to Aurora and finished up on the Large Wheel Loaders, like the 994F and 993K machines.

Once there were pictures of a mining scoop wheel in Germany that pick-up a D8 track machine and crushed it in the wheel. The bucket wheel was damaged and D8 was totaled. The wheel had to be rebuilt and the D8 off to the scrap yard.

I have seen electric haul trucks break the rear supports and wheels fall off, dumping the load or raise the front end up in the air by 20 ft. I even have had pictures of mining trucks on fire from the wheel brakes over heating and catching the oil sands on fire destroying the entire truck. Trucks and dozer were driven off of the berms not realizing they are that close, kill the operator and totaling out the truck and or dozer.

If you can think of it it will happen in mining.

The local lignite mine backed a brand new D-11 off the high wall several years ago... Operator survived, and after LOTS of repairs, the tractor is running again. .

JimW, Ever witness any of the C-175 field follow tests??. . I heard they pushed those to catastrophic failure by overloading the truck and putting them on full power runs up some custom made extra steep pit ramps...

not sure exactly what allowed the trans. to downshift... I've seen it happen on some frac units, but that was with customer supplied shift logic. . Usually just spits the driveshaft...

Im sure it will be investigated thoroughly. .
