My brother bought a new F-250 this year with 3.55's the lowest offered. He didn't think he would like it but after towing this from Raton, NM. to Ashland, Mt. (700 miles) he thinks he will keep it:) He said he stayed in 5th all the way, with 4th gear on the big hills. He said he did drop to 3rd right at the top of Raton pass because the temp reached 225* this was at 50 mph. He got 6.9 mpg on 640 miles. We towed it to Raton from Snowflake with a new F-350 dually w/4.10's. It was like it wasn't there. The steep hill into Santa Fe was 5th at 58 mph. We got 7.22 mpg in a 300 mile test.

3.42 vs 4.10’s is about slow speed and starting and stopping. If you look at J2807 you can see that it’s not a fast test, but it does have start/stop tests that gearing will play a huge role in.

This Aisin programming is horrible though. I’ve never had a 68rfe shift like this... ..notchy, sluggish beyond description.

I’ve never driven a 68RFE, but am overall pleased with the Aisin programming. I’m also coming off a NV5600 and only my “programming” to compare it to. It doesn’t shift like our 4Runner, but it’s a HD trans so I don’t expect it to.

Try running the 4.10 and 3.42 trucks for a day and a half on I-80 and 80 MPH and get back to me.

How many tow a trailer with a GVW of over 20,510????

I am helping a fellow DRV owner do maintenance on his 13 RAM SB DRW AISIN 3.42's. He only tows a combined 34k with 110k on the clock. He loves the combo as it get's the load rolling on grade easily and gets better solo mileage. He runs 5th towing. He is full-time so a lot of his miles are towing.

A little less pin weight would have been nice!

I think the 3.42's and AISIN will tow plenty based on SAE J2807. 29,300# combined. I towed that with my 11 HO DRW and 3.42's with zero issues other than hill starts and the AISIN cures that!

Snoking's personally imposed towing speed limit is 62 mph, regardless of actual speed limit and conditions. He's THAT guy. :p

I will run a little faster than 62 with my camper, but definitely not 80. There's just nowhere I'm in that big of a hurry getting to risk running that speed with a top heavy wind sail like a 5er.
My tilt deck is another story depending on the load and road conditions, I'll run 70-72 with it.

Anyone want to take a gander at my window sticker and tell me which gear ratio my truck actually has? It lists 3.73, 4.10 and 3.42. I'm guessing since it's a max tow package it's actually the 4.10 (I was reading another thread about Aisin optioned trucks and it lists max tow package as 4.10 only) not the 3.42? I'll pop the hood when I get home later tonight.
