EZ Towing Report I Promised

5th Wheel Tailgates - What are you using?

I have lost a 10' 4-wheeler trailer, without
the 4-wheeler on it. It took me a while to
get the trailer out but. But now I'll start
using those satey chains. :rolleyes

Came back from hunting about 5 years ago, the trailer was loaded with 4 motorcycles, tents and other gear. We were doing about 60 mph when my brother looked out the side mirror and said "heh, the trailer is loose". Luckily we were going up a slight hill, so I took my foot off the pedal and slowly came to a halt. The only damage was a very slight dent on the decorative plate on the tail gate and the stand on the trailer tongue was destroyed. What saved the trailer from going into the Thompson River was the little SAFETY CHAIN.

I had a gn 20ft with 12 bales of hay I was only going 17 miles down a small road I didn't bother to hook up the two chains and the air hose for the air brakes!I looked in
the bed of my truck and the hitch was starting to come unhitch I tryed to stop but
the air hose wasn't hooked up bang the the trailer came off. The hay was know go nor the
trailer! Now I'll always hook up the chains
and air hose.

I Was towing a boat and trailer going duck hunting one time about 1975, crossed over a rough railroad crossing, I saw the trailer come off the hitch, slowed down and tried to block the trailer and stop it, it passed me on the left and hit the curb on left side of road, turned around and stopped on the shoulder, threw the battery out of the boat, bent the lower unit on motor and bent the left spindle on the trailer. I have not pulled a trailer since without safety chains.

I was driving a truck tractor at work on the property with a convertor dolly hooked on the pintle hook. I came around the corner, looked back, no dolly! These things weigh about a ton. Well it JUST missed an employees new truck! #ad
Safety chains now a must, even if moving it a few feet. #ad

This past summer I was hauling a 250-bushel gravity wagon filled completly with wheat. I pulled out of the driveway, got straightened out and the hitchpin broke and I looked back and saw it catching up with me so I moved my butt out of the way and stopped. Then I watched it pass me, run through a ditch, through a neighbors yard and stop. (thank goodness upright)! The tongue made a little bit of a ditch itself when it went through the yard. After that I had to head home and change britches. :eek

Wasn't towed and wasn't me,but I was there. Years ago cruising down the Interstate in my friend's VW bug we saw we saw a tire and rim pass us at about 65 mph. About 5 seconds later the bug's rear end fell down on it's side,I think the weight shift from both of us turning our heads was all it took for the balance to go over to missing tire side.

It was not a trailer but I lost the right rear tire, wheel and axle outta my '89 commanche At 65 MPH Bounced off three concrete barriers lots of sparks finally stopped about 300 feet in front of me. Thank God no one was hurt.

Friend of mine was tired and let his wife drive his Full size Bronco pulling his nearly new 22. 5 ft Grady White (saltwater boat). On a slight curve it got to fishtailing and she hit the brakes (shouda sped up a little I think) and "da boat fwipped" I think another factor was the short wheelbase contributed too Any thoughts?
Ps he don tow no mo

I rebuilt an old landcruiser from the ground up once. and one day while bringing the body back home on the trailer from the sandblaster the ropes holding it down broke at 55MPH. all I felt was a little giggle and I thought i had gotten the trailer wheels of the pavement in the rough. I looked in the rearview just in time to see that cruiser body fly up in the air like an airplane. my thoughts were between where this body was going too land and how I was going to warm oncoming traffic of this 1500 lb rotating object coming there way. luckly the body landed in my lane and slid (while rotating) approx. 100 feet before stopping on the side of the road with me stopping just in front of it (i was also hoping it would not flip and luckly it did not). its amazing how strong one can get when your adrenaline is running. I grabbed the body and drug it back up on the trailer (by myself, all 20 vehicles past with without offering any assistance. at least thay got to see the show) but now I could not find the rope to tie the body back down. needless to say I went home very flow after that with no shoe lace's or belt.

I was hauling 10 twentyfive and thirty foot telephone poles on US 40 west of Steamboat Springs Co. Looked back just in time to watch the whole load do a fair imitation of that old picstixs game all over the road and ditch. I trusted somebody else when he said the load was secure and didn't check it myself. (like we say back home,"can't cure dumb!). Adrenaline kicked in, got all the poles off the road, than reloaded the trailer and on the road in less than an hour.
Boss had my a** for lunch.
