Carpentry/Woodworking Question

MEMORIAL DAY PICS

I went to a job interview today down in your guys neck of the woods, Tygh Valley, 30 miles south of The Dalles. I was totally unqualified, growing 2000 acres of mint, something I was clueless about. The owner liked me and my ideas enough that he decided to hire me (if I want) and hire someone else to do the mint. Now he wants me to develop 200 acres of cherries and also develop homesites around the unfarmable edges of the property. Extremely beautiful piece of property on the east slope of Mt Hood, the owner is one the most well balanced men I have ever met, he is a surgeon in Portland three days a week, runs a excavator and bulldozer on his ranch the rest of the time.
My next interview is 40 miles south of Missoula, MT on Mon. , Ag Research Specialist for the MT State University Ag Research Station there. This may take some BSing. Cummins is getting some miles this weekend.
Moral of the story is that if you can get an interview you can often prove that you are someone they want, under or over qualified, even if they don't have the right position for you at the time.

I would say this is all part of the interview. As much as they want to know about you, you need to learn about them and the job.

Be honest with them. Make sure they know you are in school and need a PT job to help make ends meet. Make sure they know that school is top priority, not finding a better paying job in a few weeks. Assure them that they'll have you for not less than six months (which seems fair for a low-paying, PT job. ) Finding decent employees is a PITA, and they really would rather avoid it. Even though practice make perfect, they'd still rather dodge the task! And assure them that, if the job works out, they'll have you and your high-quality workmanship for another 2 years or so.

But.

Find out what they expect from you on the job. If hired, you'll know how 'hard' to work. You don't want to underperform, but you also don't want to vastly overperform, either.

If they are decent people, they'll consider you. If not, then you may not want to work for them anyway!

Also, visit your school's placement office. They usually know of businesses who are looking for part-timers and can steer you in the right direction. After all, a medium-paying PT job can be better than a low-paying PT job!

Good luck!

When I got out of college in 92 the job market for my profession (geologist) in Alaska (and the rest of the world for that matter) was nill. There were no jobs to be had doing any thing related to my degree. So being the type of guy I am and needing to work to pay my bills I applied for a job at Sam's Club. They called me in and said "you have a college degree and you want to work here??" I explained to the guy that yes I had a degree, but that there were no jobs other there and that I needed to pay some bills. He hired me and had me push shopping carts for 6 months and when I did not leave he let me work other jobs. When I finally found a better job 2 years later they offered me a managment position to try to get me to stay.
Moral of the story... tell the guy the truth, work hard and all will be well.

Mark, From what I can see you are jumping tracks big time and are basically starting all over. Only this time you have a trick up your sleeve, your gift of Diesel fuel injection knowledge. I say definetly go up, up, up, and never down unless you're on the mat as it is! Keep looking for a break in your new field, but is there any way to put food on the table by using what you already know if even on a part time basis? I know you've relocated, are there any desperate shops that need a good man a few hours a week? When that door opens in your field, you won't expect it and you'll have to jump quick.

P. S. Is there any way to link your new field to the old? I just completed Mack's E-tech and V-MAC III overview for our new fleet, is there any future working for an OEM? The electronics are mind boggling!

Good Luck!

Wayne, this time, I'm taking the leap and not looking back. I'm never again to be a mechanic or diesel injection guy (unless it's to help a friend or work on my own). One of the things I've really done wrong several times in my life is to forget to keep looking forward.

I've looked for ways to put my knowledge of diesels and mechanics to use in the chosen field... and I think the TDR website is as close as I'm going to get. But I don't know that, for sure. The future is unwritten.

As far as the job goes, the prospective employer has changed the job description, and I'm looking at a step up to fill it...

I've been collaborating with some other people who do web design, and I've been helping them out teaching them how to implement scripts and other web-related technologies. That's precisely what I want to do in the future, I just have to find a way to do it.

In the meantime... Do any of you out there know of some tiny community that needs an RN and IT help - on a temporary basis? We're looking at this as a possibility in the near future.

Mark, Just remember its easier to look for a job, while you have a job. Even if its just for a few weeks... you will found something
