Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What injectors to buy ???

Hey guys... . !



My Dad has a 97 4x4 with a 5 speed trans. The truck is a work truck (been around the block) and it has 300,000 miles on it.



He needs a set of injectors for it. He would like a set that would give him mild to moderate hp gain, decent fuel economy or even better fuel economy if that can be done along with a small hp upgrade. In a nutshell he's looking for a good alround injector that will last with the above mentioned.



Any recommendations ???

I went with the 300's from city diesel-

Haven't installed them yet but I think they are like a 30-40 HP gain, and you can't beat the price tag. My 94' has 244K on it and I bought it for the same purpose, to replace the old tired injectors but give a little gain in the process, seems to fit perfect.

The 300s, like the 370s, are marine injectors aren't they? I was thinking of getting some too but I held off because they don't have the ideal spray pattern for our pistons. If I'm wrong on this, someone let me know.

Yes they are marines but since they don't just dump fuel like the 370's they don't cause problems like spuratic idle, bad smoke, less fuel mileage, ETC.

He already has 215"s, some of he best around for economical operation. I am not sure if they ever really get old and wear out. What makes you think they need to be changed? If performance, not economy, is your priority, moving the plate, or plate changes might be a cheaper/better choice.

If you really want to "ramp it up" then, injectors, and plate changes might be appropriate. This is also the time to start looking for clutch changes.

Injector lifespan is approx. 150,000 before popoff pressures start to fall and internal parts wear, according to local injection shop. I would definitely pull them and have them serviced or replaced by 200k but I know guys run the much longer without issues (but they're probably not running optimally).



I have 300s in my truck now, and I just pulled the head. Even with the thin washers the spray pattern shows less than 1/2 is ending up in the bowl. Most hits the top edge and some spreads across the piston crown. So when I get my head on I'm going with something else. The 300s only have 4 holes in the tip.

Well if he doesn't mind spending a decent bit more money the DD2's will probably work well.

Personally I'm not a fan of the marine injectors. Cheap yes, and they can make good power, but other than that they are crap IMHO.



For a mild upgrade DD2 would be a good choice or a set of Stage 3 sticks from Dynomite Diesel Performance. I would consider both of those.

I really know squat about injectors, I've had my 01 24 valve 3-4 months and it has 58 k on it. I've got a ways to go yet my truck.



My Dads looks like a hurt'n unit !

A good set of injectors should last till the body can take no more.

The 300's have a different spray angle. I'm not a fan of them.



The DD2 are made by Diesel Dynamics and the Stage 3's I was referring to are made by Dynomite Diesel Performance.

Dyno-Mite diesel just got a new extrude hone machine and guys have been pleased with the injectors they have been doing. They have been modifying stock injectors with great results, so I would consider this another option

One last question, the last time he installed injectors the timing was set at 12 degrees. What would be the optimum timing setting on a 97 with 300,000 miles on it. Just thinking that new injectors and an adjustment on the timing might make a big difference all in all, or maybe 12 degrees is okay ?. Any comments or suggestions ?.

Wow 12 degrees is pretty retarded. . . I usually suggest 15. 5 to max of 16. 0 for best improvement without risking head gasket failure. Coming up from 12 you'll notice quite a difference, it'll wake up at higher RPM and mileage will come up.
