Does anyone remember...

I was wondering if anyone knows what models and years the 8. 3 was installed in International tractors also what was the horse power rating?

Case-IH Magnum tractors. 7100/7200/8900 series tractors. They switched to the 9L with the MX Magnums. Late 80's 'til a few yrs. ago when they switched to the MX. 130-225 PTO/HP.

From what I heard (at least early on), the tractors were shipped with the same HP. The dealers were to turn them down for the smaller HP tractors. Not all of them did, so there are some 7110s running 190PTO/HP. I've run a couple that were.

If memory serves me, they also used the 8. 3L in the 9110 4WD tractors.

Not sure of the series, but they used the 8. 3 in some of their combines also. I thought the 7250 was rated at 235hp or 250hp? My uncle's 7140 is putting out 237hp at the pto(they had it turned up some). I really like the Magnums. Wish I could stuff an 8. 3 and a transmission similar to the Magnums in my truck.

What is the new 9. 0l motor? Is it a Cummins?

9. 0L version is called an "L". Block is basically the same as a C8. 3, bored and stroked I believe.

IH combines used the 8. 3 from somewhere around 1990 (1660/80) till current (2366/88). Started around 230hp, currently at 280hp with the 2388.

I doubt the theory about the dealer turning the engines down is true. Most heavy duty engine companies make there $ on horsepower, Therefore a large Hp engine even of the same series costs more, even though there may be very few if any internal differances. Therefore Case would be paying more for something they wouldnt use. besides all engines are dynoed for power at the factory, and tuned there. If you have a power complaint on a peice of equipment sometimes the dealer will turn it up for you.

Let's see, a 9330, 240hp, unsure of year- looks to be mid-late 90s. '03 2388 combine- 270hp, I think. I was telling the guy that if the pump was right, he could get almost any HP he wanted out of it, providing he had enough airflow. Think the new MX270 has a 8. 3. That one is NICE. I hated to get into my 91 p/u after being in that all day.

Here is one for you'll, have you ever watched the EGT's on tractors, back in the day prior to the Navy when I farmed I remember the case tractors always running high EGT's as they had a guage installed (2470 4WD) then on our 7700 ford I asked about it and was told they don't run high at all. Wish I knew then what I know now!

The Magnum tractors, at least the 7100-8900 do, have a EGT gauge in the dash. I've never seen one out of the green zone. No numbers though. Just green, red, and maybe yellow  , been long enough, don't recall. :(

Wish all tractors came with them standard. Especially if you are pulling high draft tillage equipment in heavy ground.

I worked on a farm with two IH 5488s? in the early '90s and if you put the throttle full forward the EGT would be 1350 in under 2 minutes. I never understood building a tractor that could destroy itself with the wrong operator at the controls
