Please help this virgin out, what is a cold air box? What does it do? (i. e. , help performance, increase mpg, increase hp, increase noise, etc. ) What do these cost, approx. ?

Thanks

air box

Generally this refers to having the air box get "cold " air from outside the engine compartment. The cooler the intake air the better, denser fuel mixture, cooler EGTs just all around better performance. The stock box retrieves air from the fenderwell which is "cool". Some of the after market boxes route the intake hose differently like behind the bumber or via more piping to the fender well all in an effort to get more cool air. The stock set up works fine with quite a bit of HP mods.

There is an excellent article in the last TDR magazine about plumbing the stock box with a 4'' ABS pipe, to reduce restriction and get cold air from bottom. Cheap mod :D Dan

Has anyone done the 4" plumbing on a 2nd gen truck? I looked at mine and can't see much room to do it like the 3rd gen's!
