What is Depth Clearance for Front Speakers

Fellow Rammers:



I just spent over an hour seaching posts for speaker depth clearance on front doors of my 02 3500. I can't believe as much as replacing the speakers has been discussed, no specific measurements are mentioned.



I'm planning on replacing all four door speakers w/ 6X9s and installing a 600 watt amp. Gonna run heavier speaker wires from the doors to the amp, which will live under the driver's seat. I'm also looking at insulating the entire truck interior while I have everything out. I plan on keeping the stock reciever and running the factory tweeters through a filter straight off of the stock receiver.

Can't give you numbers but had an idea. If you go to www.crutchfield.com or look in a crutchfield catalog, you can access application charts that are model specific filters to select appropriate speakers without vehicle mount mods. At least you can know what speakers will find without having dimensions to know how!

I called Crutchfield some time back with the same question and according to their advisors the stock 6x9's in our trucks are unusually shallow and no aftermarket 6x9 speakers will fit. Went to my local Mobile One and they said the same thing but that it was no big deal-they just cut the door panels and put the grilles over tha hole. I prefer to keep it as stock looking as possible so I went with 6-1/2" components (w/baffles). Separate tweets and woofers with external crossovers run by a four way amp (bridged two way amp pushes a single twelve). I couldn't be happier.

The spacing is something like 2 7/16 inch. You won't find many 6x9's that fit without cutting the panel and using the speakers grills. I also went with 6 1/2".

On my '95, I put Sony 6X9 Xplod's in with no problems in the doors.

I already have speakers

Thanks for all the responses: I already have 6X9 Sound Laboratory "Sound Storm" speakers w/ 50 oz strontium magnets and rated at 325 watts RMS. Yep, that's RMS not peak. I bought 4 pr on E-bay for $96. I have a pair connected a Sony 100watt/ch component amp in my 5th wheel and they are awsome. They are 3. 25" deep, so I'll have to cut the panel and fabricate a spacer. I'm not concerned w/ factory look w/ all the extras I have on the interior.



Another big attraction to these bad boys is the killer base repsonse the have. I don't have room for a woofer w/Geno's storage tray under the rear seat, Rob's center console cooler in place of the middle front seat and driver's seat has 400 watt CB amp under it.

Did you have to do any drilling or cutting? How did you splice the wires in or did you find a harness adaptor?

Erik,



No drilling or cutting just removed the optional back covers off the magnets. Fit fine in factory location even used the factory screws but it does come with some new ones if you want to use those. As for wiring I changed the head unit and am running a 4-channel amp. So none of the stock speaker wiring is used. I don't know if they make a plug in adaptor to the factory harness but if they don't you could always splice in the wires. Hope this helps...
