It measures the temperature of the air inside the intake manifold. Fueling and timing are adjusted by the computer based on this temp. (Most autos have one in the air filter housing)
Many here have had problems with this sensor that has adversely affected mileage. It costs ~$15 at a Cummins shop and is harder to locate than it is to change.
Do you have that Cummins part number handy for the IAT sensor? I ordered my last one from Dodge for $22 but a couple of the "5 Star" dealers I called wanted $35
