Don't think there is an average

The return line on my 3500 went 15k before leaking a full tank of fuel out in 20 minutes. Warranty replaced the hose with the same funky stuff, went 60k before leaking again. The 2500 went over 100k with no problems, I replaced it just to be on the safe side. Seems like most overflow valves get replaced around 75k. Cheapest way is to monitor your fuel pressure so as not to replace parts needlessly nor get caught with your pants down.

thanks for the info. i have one of the tst press adapters. what else do i need to test the press. i don't really want to monitor it continuously. what kind of hose and what kind of pressure guage? can i just check the idle press? what should it be at idle? thanks. scott.

Maybe I was lucky

I had the return line done at 150K. It was not leaking, but had 5sp out and took advantage of easy access.

I changed the overflow valve at 210K. Some thing here, good pressure working fine. Was chasing a slight "ticking" sound. Was not overflow valve.

While it is good to be conservative and change parts before they break, sometimes we collect allot of good used parts that work perfectly fine in the process.

Scott I use a TST adaptor screwed into a grease gun hose with a 30 psi 1/8" gauge connected with a 1/8" coupling to the other end to do temporary checks. Will set you back $15 since you already have the TST adaptor. The GG hose makes it easier to screw in the TST adaptor though the maze of wires/hoses and is also rigid enough that you can tighten it sufficiently by turning on the gauge end of the hose. you should read at least 18 psi at idle, no more than 26 at full throttle. Be careful not to lose the copper washer that comes with the TST adaptor, it's easy, I found out the hard way.
