Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What is the best way to test fuel pressure?

I am still getting the P216 code with my code scaner. I have changed the fuel filter (really dirty). What is the best way to test the fuel pressure? How many key cycles would it take to erase the p216 code?

'99 3500 quad cab 2wd auto, no mods

Measure it right at the fuel line inlet on the VP44. If it has a Schraeder fitting at that location (my 2001 does), most fuel pressure test kits will connect right there.

How many key cycles would it take to erase the p216 code?

I'm not certain, but it can take quite a few. Doesn't your code scanner clear trouble codes? If so, clear it with that and see if the code comes back. But in any case you;re doing the right thing by checking the fuel pressure... that's a must.

My 05 clears after the fourth drive... seems it must be driven a few miles not just started!

When I try to clear the code with my scan tool I get the message "FUNCTION UNSUCCESSFUL!" I thought it was five key cycles with all peramaters correct befoe it would clear, but I have passed that since I replaced the filter. I looked for a shreader valve but did not see one. I will look again.

My ScanGauge II has a tough time with some of the Cummins codes. They can be very persistent.



Your 216 code is not good news. Usually means replacing the VP44. My truck ran for months with a 216 code but finally had to swap out the pump.

Find someone with a Smarty or go to AutoZone or the like and have them clear the code for you for free. To my knowledge the codes will not "self-clear", only the CEL goes out after so many cycles with no new codes set.

And of course, if its a hard, permanent failure, the code will return as soon as the engine is started - maybe sooner...

I bought a special setup that the Dodge mechanics have. It connects directly to the valve on the side of the VP44 on my 01. I am not sure if the earlier years have one there... Some apparently use a valve on the fuel filter housing. The kit has adapters for both the VP and the FF.

I looked for a shreader valve but did not see one. I will look again.

If you have one on the VP44, it should look like what you see in the attached picture. Number 6 is pointing to it.
