My brand new truck arrived this afternoon. They haven't let me pick it up yet because they need to "prep" it. I noticed a thick black oil like substance in the exhaust pipe after it came off the semi. The dealer said it was probably just cutting oil used to cut the metal exhaust pipe. This sounds logical enough, but I wanted to see if this sounded right to you guys, or if anyone else had experienced the same thing? Thanks for any imput.

JEEZE - sounds like impending trouble to me - better let me put in a few "test miles" for ya - absolutely NO CHARGE... ;)

I sure wouldn't worry about it unless it continues after a few miles down the road... Only potential source out of the ordinary would be a bad turbo seal - but not likely...

Thanks for the offer, but I think I can handle the test driving;) :) . I'm still a diesel beginner so I don't know exactly what the turbo seal is or how it could cause the sludge. If you don't mind helping me out a little more, I'd appreciate the education. I was really afraid the sludge might be some kind of blow by, but that would be a lot of oil for a truck with two miles on it!!

The bearings in the turbo receive a steady flow of oil for cooling and lubrication - on rare occasions, a shaft seal will fail and allow oil into the intake or exhaust tract - not real common, especially on a new truck - again, I seriously doubt you have any problem...

It is probably a combination of things. The engine probably hasn't been warmed up properly since it was built. Soot from the engine, moisture in the exhaust, and oil residue in the pipes all collect in the pipe. Nothing to worry about! A good run will get clean it out.

It's the Muffler Bearing!

I hope mine is ok when it finally get's here :)

Seriously... . sounds like some good advice already posted.

spray a little water in your exhaust and start it up for a bit. the water will mix with the soot and will leave a trail of sooty water which when it drys up, is thicker... could just be that [after being washed at factory?]

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I picked it up a few hours ago and after driving it around for a while it seems to be going away. To be honest though, I've been so excited about the rest of the truck I haven't really checked it out very well. What a truck!!:D :D
