I keep hearing on the forum about the clock spring going bad. What the heck is one, and do I need to worry about it going bad on my '99 like I am with the lift pump?

Nevermind... ... I just did a search and found out what one is. I should have done that in the first place!

What I still need to know is: Does the recall affect '99's?

Thanks!

9,670 miles and my clock spring just went. Made a poping noise and air bag light came on. Guess it is back to the dealer.

ok guys, i am still curious... i have read the posted "search" threads, and i have an idea what the clock spring does when it breaks, but there is still no mention of it primary function, and why or what causes it to break. please enlightin me and i am sure a few other people.

It's the wiring in the steering wheel. When it tears loose you loose all your wheel mounted controls and your air bag. I've heard two different reasons for why this happens. One says the wire doesn't stay in place and catches on something. The other says a piece of insulation/backing on the airbag assembly comes loose and falls into the wire. End result of either one is you turn the wheel and pull the wires apart.

Mine let go just before 50K. Surprisingly I was only at the dealer 45 min to get it fixed and they didn't even screw anything else up doing it.

Hope this helps
