What is the deal with Chevy's VIN #'s

I see some people talking about VIN #'s and I would like to be filled in. Thanks.

They GM boys have the advantage of having GM employees in their membership, and have discovered several posers by requesting VIN's. It is not a very popular practice here, but has gotten some bogus claims of problems off their boards. The GM guys can also see if the problems were addressed by a dealer if legit. There is some good and bad, but it is what they want.
