The 3rd Generation motors have the "High Pressure Common Rail" fuel system, in other words electronically fired injectors, the computer controls all the fuel mapping, similar to an EFI gas-burner. Same as a Powerstroke/Duramax. More power, less noise, but more complicated, and if you have to buy injectors you better have plenty of money! The 2nd Generation VP44 fuel pump uses sensors to adjust fuel timing and pressure, with "Dumb" injectors, I like it better, one of the main reasons I opted for it over the new one, the noise!!

Open both hoods and put a wrench on the: turbo, exhaust system, valve cover, power steering, etc. The 2nd's have a lot more room to work in.

Thanks you answered it vary niceley {if thats a word} Powerstroke went to it in 94 duramax came out of the box with it. I have a 2001 HO 6 speed,it just got totaled,trying to deside whitch way to jump. thank's again

That's exactly what I have!! Love those disc brakes!!! Now that I have owned it for awhile, I'm glad I didn't get the 03 they tried to sell me!!

Hopefully you guys won't kick me out of the 24V forum, but I thought I better clarify;

- The Ford HEUI injectors are NOTHING like the Duramax and Cummins Common rail set-up. Thier unit injectors are way more complicated, expensive and (based on experience) prone to failures. I expect that Ford will FINALLY give up on HEUI and go to a common rail system soon.

- Injectors for 24V's are cheaper and less complicated than the solenoid operated 3rd gen injectors. To make a fair comparison I would say that the advantages of the 24V (HO) motor over the 555 are; cheaper injectors; less chance of injector problems; more bombing potential without upgrading the turbo. The advantages of the 555 are; more stock power; far less chance of an injector pump failure; decreased noise levels; increased cold starting ability; don't have to bleed the fuel system if it's run dry.

Of course there are numerous differences in the trucks themselves, but that wasn't the question. I am extremely happy with both my 3rd gen trucks, but I will say that if I had the foresight to order the right truck in '01 (a HO 6spd dually), I'd still have it and be very happy!

Cheers,

Dave
