I know - DON"T DO THIS - but I once (not on my Cummins) had a diesel that the fuel filter sprung a leak and drained the injector pump..... had a nightmare getting it started..... But on the ISB's - do you need to crack a fuel line OR is it self priming?????

If you ran it out of fuel by a hard run it is best to crack 3 or so lines. If it is after replacing injectors or a filter then I usually put my box on kill and floor it while cranking it over. This works with DD2 or larger injectors. I just did a truck this weekend with Mach 2's and it worked perfect. 4 cranks and it fired right up.

Crack 3 or more, and crank, and crank, and crank. Just let the lift pump go through its 20-25sec. cycle each time. Once you see fuel coming out of the cracked lines, then it should try to start, then close them and proceed to crank and let it run. Don't touch the throttle, let it purge itself.

Again, this is if you ran it out of fuel. Changing injectors is a slightly different process.

You start the procedure in this way: You grab the steering wheel firmly with both hands and begin to pound your head against it hard while shouting, "Why oh why did I pass by all those gas stations without stopping??"

I know this because I almost ran out of fuel myself the other day. I was down to probably less than 2 gallons. :{ Luckily about that time I found a place!

Procedure if you run out of fuel...

1- Take 5 gallon can to fuel station and fill with diesel

2- Open truck fuel fill door

3- Pour fuel in tank

Sorry, I couldn't resist when I saw the title of the lead post.

I just crack the filter cap and bump he motor to fire up the LP. When fuel starts to spew on the ground close the cap and put the box on "kill" and hold it to the floor. It should fire up. I did it with DD 3's and it worked fine. (I like that "put the box on KILL:D :-laf )

Interesting, does putting the box on kill and putting the foot to the floor also work when changing the fuel filter? My truck is always kind of stubborn after I change my filter.

It is what those of us with Comp boxes say when we mean to put the box on level 5/sub-level 5. In other words, the fueling module all the way up.

Cranking the engine for a long time is not good for the starter

I suggest to just turn the key on. Then listen for the fuel pump to turn off when it turns of just bump the starter the pump will run for about another 15sec. Do not crank it just slightly bump it. Then just repeat this cycle to keep the pump cycling, make sure you turn the key completly of and wait 4or5 seconds for the next cycle . It would help if you loosen the fitting at the VP44. When fuel runs out of the fuel line in a solid stream, its ready to start. You will need to cycle it this way about 4 or 5 times. This method keeps you from possibly burning the starter or drawing the batteries down. Merv

the starters are pretty tough, though. I have given mine some severe abuse when I was having starting problems, and it never failed.

Just make sure you give it a chance to cool down after a big run.
