Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) what is the rubber cover against the engine on the driver side

While searching for an oil leak around the power steering/vaccum pump area I noticed what appeared to be a rubber cover that is built as though it is supposed to fit tight against the engine. It is warped at both the top and bottom causing it to be pulled away from the engine by about 1/2 an inch. What is this and what should I do about it. By the way I haven't found my oil leak yet. It isn't coming from the power steering pump but from above that area, I think.

I just turned 176000 with my 94 and she still runs strong but I park in my gravel driveway so I don't have to clean up all the oil.

That is the lifter cover. It is rubber covered to help dampen noise. The rubber on my cover is also pealing away. It may be more trouble than it is worth to R/R. HTH

That could be the source of your leak... ..... The lifter cover gasket on mine slipped at arround 170k miles. It will make a big mess untill its replaced. You have to pull the pump to get to it. Good luck with it.

The side cover is stamped steel with a rubber gasket around the perimeter. You are looking at the noise suppression mat that is attached to the cover.
