On my 89 CTD work truck the engine temp rose to 220 degrees, I have never seen it above 190 in the past. I've had it about 2 months now and pull a 6x14 lawn trailer. Radiator is full along with reservoir and fan clutch is engaging. At what temp should I start to worry?

The temperature at which it will blow is dependant on two things, the pressure that the cooling system operates at and the coolant mix ratio. All being well it should pop at about 265F #ad
. For obvious reasons you cannot operate at this temperature, but 220F should be ok. Several things to check are coolant strength and condition, pressure test cooling system and rad cap. Also check condition of radiator fins for blockage and corosion. I always run a screen over the grill except in winter #ad
, amazing how many bugs it collects. You may want to do a search of ealier posts on this topic, over heating is more common on early 1st gens, the earlier models had a smaller verticle radiator and the later ones have a cross flow unit. Some meber have converted to the cross flow rad.

Hello FD5. you didn't say if it happened just the one time or if it happens all the time. the sensor could have spiked or the T'stat could be telling you it's ready to go to the ford parts warehouse. keep an eye on it and watch for any rise and fall of the temp, that's a indicator that the T'stat is bad. what does it do when your idling at a stoplight? or pulling a long hill? how long does it take to warm up? does the heater ever blow cold air? does it ever gurgle and hiss when you shut it off? is there any coolant leaks?? just a few things to think about.
