Help! What is wrong with this?

My truck has no power,at least not what I expected with the install of another 70hp and 200fp/tq. It is the 180 hp ctd. Bought a #6 from Piers to install. Found a TST #8 already inplace. The #8 was pushed back very far. Removed the 8 and in its place went the TST 6 I just bought. Moved the 6 foreward twice, maybe 3/8", I see no difference at all in power. Am I wrong to expect seat of the pants pulling? All clamps are tight. I am at my wits end. I did not know the# 8 was in the truck. The guy I got the truck from did not tell me it was in there. I expected the #6 to add zip, zoom, bam, and ohh. I feel no change at all. My wifes Astro van will smoke this turkey. Am I expecting too much?I hate to think that I threw away another wad of cash. What do I do?

Start with the basics. Check the fuel heater screen, fuel filter, air filter, lift pump pressure, fuel lines in good condition etc. Check for plugged cat no matter what! Check intake manifold cover for leaks. Make sure the fuel cutoff solenoid pulls all the way and you get full throttle with the pedal. Can you get any smoke on hard runs? What's the boost? What's the egt? You'll have to consult the 180hp/auto guys for the specifics. Mine did 25psi stock at a mile high. Slide the AFC forward and make sure the tube into the diaphragm isn't leaking. Check the AFC starwheel adj. - loosen the spring pressure for more preboost fuel. Craig

Boost,egt`s

The boost will not get over 20#`s.

Egt will not go over 950.

Had valves adj`d two weeks ago,and new FG fuel filter was installed. The CTD will rev to 2600 rpm,and no smoke, even on hard runs.

:( :(

Is your truck a CA EGR valve? There are some problems trying to increase the power because of the EGR valve. I'm not sure of the details ('95 didn't have it), but Piers or TST would know.

You sure aren't getting enough fuel! I think I'd check the AFC, fuel pressure and cat next. Make sure the wastegate is closing tight and adjusted right. I took my wastegate tube off - I can do that at this altitude! Did you check the fuel screen? Reach down from above with a 17mm box end to take it off. I blow mine out to make sure it is clear - parafin and algae can be hard to see. Craig

JSmith, You're not expecting too much. You should be impressed with your truck. I know I am with mine.

I think I would get on the phone with Mark Chapple (sp?) or Piers Harry. It sounds to me like you aren't getting enough fuel. Piers has a diagram on his site showing a common problem with the rack travel catching. i think I phrased that right.

I've got the 160hp pump, I'm impressed with the performance and I get about 35psi boost at wot.

JSmith,

You have a fuel delivery problem somewhere. I am going to suspect the AFC is your problem. You may have cracked the tube going to the AFC housing from the manifold or you may just have a leak in the connection.

The best way to eliminate the AFC troubles is to just take it off the pump, take a bit off duct tape to cover the hole that is left in the pump and drive around the block. If the power is back to normal, you have an AFC problem. A slight amount of oil will leak out. Not much though.

Testing an AFC is simple and once you have it off the truck just push the link forward as far as you can and hold your thumb over the boost hole. If the link stays put you have no leak in the AFC it self. If it checks good you can start checking your boost line and fittings to the AFC housing from the manifold for cracks or leaky fittings.

Im pretty certain the AFC is the problem. Drive the truck without the AFC and let me know what happens.

Plate/AFC

Thanks guys for the help.

Nothing new yet.

Don,if I remove the vac hose from the rear of the AFC will this do instead of removing the AFC?

I ask because it is very windy, with fine dust blowing for the last 8hrs. I can put some tape over the exposed lines.

Thanks again guys for the help.

I want to run with the big boys. :p :p

One is pressure to the wastegate and the other line is pressure from the intake to operate the wastegate and AFC. You need to be sure the AFC isn't limiting your fuel. If you loosen the AFC starwheel and slide the AFC housing forward, it will not have so much control. Pressure testing the AFC diaphragm like Don said is a good idea. If those lines or diaphragm leak, it will keep the AFC from allowing the rack to travel to the fuelplate. I guess it's possible to have a leaking wastegate actuator. You could unhook the pressure line from the manifold and do a pressure test at that point(about 40psi) and check everything at once. Craig
