I din't know about the 5 speeds but the 6 speeds are cast iron, Mine's as rusty as heck!

The NV5600 uses a nodular iron case. Mine is rusty, but I never plan to paint it. Remember that rust on cast iron is not necessarily bad, from a functional standpoint. In iron, rust will propagate just through the surface, then the underlying iron is cut off from oxygen and won't rust any further. Once it's rusted, it is best to leave it alone.

Pulls/drifts right and drone at 1950 to 2300 rpm. Banks exhaust helped a lot. Bet NEW ones wont do it. Redesigned the exhaust manifold and turbo. say more power but I bet it was the drone issue. Been told by dealer personal it don't PULL. Well on certain roads it drifts and some roads it SWAPS lanes in a few car lengths.

I bought mine in Sept. have 12K on it. Pulls to the right pretty good, wind noise on drivers window, exhaust/diesel smell at idle, passenger window is twice as slow as all others, sometimes engine gets really noisy (low rpms), only getting about 16 mpg, a/c doesn't seem to work at idle, don't hear compressor kick in, warm air blowing, anyone else with this problem? Otherwise love it!!!! Oh and terrible service by the dealer!!! John

The only issue I have with my 3rd Gen.

Is I cant get out of it, the more I drive it, the more I like it.

I catch my self taking the long way home

225 miles and 4 days old.

i have noticed an exhaust smell when sitting at a traffic light, if the wind is just right. it is NOT vapor fumes or raw fuel. it is a little annoying but then again we didn't buy gas engines!

no pulling whatsoever - rack and pinion is beautiful.

power is excellent, no vibrations. might be some resonances at certain rpm's, but for me it is not an issue.

i have noticed the volt gauge stays below 14 for a while after starting. is this because charging is inhibited by the ecm until the heaters are done cycling?

engine pulls up to 3500 in lower gears. am i lucky or is this normal? mileage is continuing up. currently at 18. 4 (by overhead computer)

some have complained about not being able to fill fuel tank at high rate. i have no problem. i can fill as fast as the pump will go.

love that turbo whine!!! yes, this is the right truck !

When the grid heaters are on, they suck about 100 amps. The alternator can't keep up--this has been the situation since 1989 and long-term owners are used to it. After you get going, they go off at about 20 mph.

I've had my truck 9 months and 22,400 miles. So far the flaws have been:

--Problem with ECM cropped up at 10,000 miles causing loads of gray exhaust smoke from idle to WOT. New ECM cured that.

Well that's all so far. There's a few annoyances like the hyperactive grid heaters, but overall it's an awesome truck.

It's my 3rd CTD, the best by far, so far!

The wind is probably just bringing in a little wiff of smoke from the tailpipe. One of the unadvertised benefits of owning the best pickup engine there is.

Personally, I saver those little wiffs as they smell good! I like the smell of these Cummins engines. Now Fords and Chevy diesels stink to me. And so do gasoline engines!

The truck is almost exactly 1 year old. It turned 55K miles today on the way to Lowes. The majority of my problems have been in the sealing of fluids. I have had three pretty good leaks . The right front axle seal, than the rear pinion and left rear axle seal started leaking at about the same time. They were all fixed by the dealer free of charge

I have also had a couple of headlight/tailight issues. The factory ground on the right headlight left a lot to be desired. I kept losing the headlight. I must have torn the light out a half dozen times... . a pain with the Buckstop. The dealer finally found the problem and regrounded the light. I had to replace the light strip in the right rear tail light as well. One of the bulbs was vibrating causing the bulb light to constantly chime in the cab. VERY annoying at 1am coming home from Houston. The strip was replaced and I have had no other issues.

We went to Colorado over Christmas and I was not happy with all the snow that gets DUMPED into the drivers seat when the door is opened. I would learn to brush that off if I lived in that type of climate

Other than that I am pretty happy with the truck. It averages around 16. 5mpg at 70mph... a little better now with the Ricksons.

One of the Colorado tankfuls was a little over 18... the highest it has ever been... 9. 5K comes down the passes with little effort... . CJ

Soon to be on my 3rd radio. It's the am/fm single CD that's standard for the SLT. Dealer says the truck is not the problem, just bad radios. We'll see. No other problems and love the truck.

Also soon to be on my third radio... ... . same single CD unit. Terrible "Death Wobble" that they can't seem to fix and buzzing in dash at radio area... ... ... ... . I think they left a screw out on the last radio changeout. Power steering fitting was cross-threaded and blew one night when I was running a service call... ..... other than that... ... ... . NO problems... .
