have you ever had FR power mess with the truck

like the trans the vp 44 the trucks computer

I don't want to know what radio to put in I have three radio in my radio room that I have picked out one of withc may work better

I put clip-on ferrite beads on the wiring to the VP44 to try to keep some of the RF off the wires. They're the standard Rad Shack clip-ons. . Havent run a radio in this truck yet, but plan to some day. Either way, its a good idea to keep rf off the wires of our "electronic" trucks.

Gary_K7GLD added a toroid choke on the wiring to his VP because he runs pretty good power out of his radio, and I believe he has said he isnt having RFI problems. . Maybe Gary can chime in here with some info on his radio setup. . "Looking for K7GLD. . "

Its going to depend on what frequency or band your tx'ing on if it will affect the truck or not. One band may not be noticable, and another band might activate the windshield wipers or whatever depending on wire lengths, grounding, etc. .

Will be interesting to see how the 10/11 meter bands work out. . ;)

Solid-state control circuits don't react well to strong RF levels nearby - 100 watts is often the max you can get away with without significant interference issues.

Here's a shot of the toroid I installed on the pump wire to my VP-44 - that black wired cube to the center-right of the photo - it's a clamshell type, pretty effective and easy to install on wiring with enough slack to take a few turns for best coupling and filtering:

I use the same type on nearly every lead I can reach on the truck wiring, and also on the radio wiring as well. I have had significant RF interference prior to the toroid filtering - enough on 20 meters to make the truck buck and snort pretty hard - couldn't use the 600 amp at all on 20 meters. 40 meters is my main mobile band, and that is clean at 600+ watts to the antenna.

2 Connex 3300's, one all chrome, with long Peterbilt Jeweled Toggle Switch Extensions for the knobs. .

1 Cobra 29 LTD Classic SIDE MIC-- The REAL 29-- All Chrome, with Jeweled Peterbilt Long Toggle Switch Extensions for knobs.

Road King 56 Mic Also Chrome...

Guess I have a soft spot for CHROME...

BTW, How do you like that Galaxy 95T?? I have been thinking of selling my 2 connex radios for one BIG BIG Galaxy... Just curious...

For what it's worth, here's a pic of my mobile Ham radio installation:

Here's the 600 watt solid state no-tune amp under the passenger seat:

View of interior of truck, showing lack of visible evidence of installation - only the Icom faceplate is up on the dash for ease of operation and visibility - the main box sits under the center console out of sight:

Effective communications? This setup is capable of instant operation from 160-440, and typically down the road, I run 40/20 meter antennas that are homemade to handle the 600 watts, and also a 2 meter/440 mag mount on the top of the cab for those bands. Absolutely NO tuning required for any of the bands, just switch bands, and GO!

I've literally communicated around the world with this setup! ;) :D

I've run up to about 600W on the Ham bands (10M, right next to the CB bands) and have not had any problems. My truck is a 95 and the computer does not get mixed up with any engine control functions, but even computer controlled functions (like cruise control and battery charging) have not been affected.

I think you are probably OK unless this is really a high power operation. (Sorry, I know nothing about CB)

how do you keep that linear cool it must get hot as hell when you talk on it for any time at all

Not really - it has a thermostat-controlled internal fan that comes on at a preset temperature, and I have added a pair of external PC type muffin fans to the outer case at the vent slots - they run constantly when the amp is on.

I thank I will just use a stock radio in the truck and see how that goes

we had the texas star 500v and the uniden 78 in a ford explorer and it did a number on the transmission we had to have it reflashed two or three times

we sold the truck it was never rite after the rf got in to it

I run a souped up 33HML Galaxy / Astatic / Wilson 2000 Trucker

Fire Stik stainless steel hood mount. ;)

I was running a Cobra29 with a 600 watt brick... no mods other than keeping the SWRs down low... used a Wilson 5000 antenna in the middle of the roof.

The only thing that happened is the seatbelt light would flicker on-off when you'd key up, but that happens in my 04 also...
