Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What kind of diode do I need for my starter?

I want to add a Diode to my starter for more protection. I just added Larry B contacts today and want no more trouble. I would like to fashion my own as I think $24. 50 is a lot for a diode. I'm retired now on limited funds.

What I need is the value of the diode so I can get it at Radio Shack. Any help is appreciated.

15-24v(min), 80-100a(approx) diode. You would wire the ring terminal feed on the starting solenoid to the cathode, then the anode to the starter. (eg. . -start feed- --> diode(cathode) --> diode(anode) --> starter)

Sorry to say Herb that due to closing out components, your Radioshacks might not have it - if so there are online source, by personal experience www.mouser.com.

Also if you are concerned about suppressing inductive kickback from the starter itself you could wire a device called a Varistor across the starter to ground - just need one with a voltage rating (the voltage where it clamps) above 14. 4 V and as much current as you can get (I have seen some with a surge current of 10,000A). when the varistor senses voltage rising above threshold, it acts as an instant short to absorb the transient then releases. Trigger time is VERY fast even for an electronic component. I might go for V > 50v and I = BIG

I agree with Herb, $25 is pretty high for a $5 diode. It is a good deal for anyone that needs the diode and has to have instructions for installation.

I am using a 1N1190, 40 amp, 600 volt silicon diode that I found on eBay normally used as an isolation diode for solar cells.

Ordering from some of the mail order outlets can be a problem because of their minimum order requirements as well as "shipping and handling" charges.

In all fairness, I believe shipping costs are already factored into Larry B's prices.

I saw a diode from West Marine for battery isolation. I may look at that or use the specs in this thread to locate a diode. If all else fails, LArry B will get my business. I have friends with Dodges, I also want to setup with diodes if the price was right. Thanks for the help. Herb
