No towing on the first tank, heavy towing on all subsequent tanks except the most recent one. The three tanks before the most recent one have had minimal towing, the one with 17. 1 MPG had zero towing. I'm hoping that I can average 17-18 MPG empty and I think I will.



Truck weighs 7,025 empty.

Thanks Guys for the info. I guess I'll take the "new truck payment" and plow it back into my old 97. I dunno tho, with 203K on it is about worn out :-laf :-laf Seriously tho, the winters up here are so freeking hard on a rig. I have a lot of things to fix.

The wife and I were talking the other day on the way into town and she told me that she would like it if I would get a newer truck with a trailer. So the question is is what kind of milage are you 3rd gen folks getting with your trucks? A guy at work has a 03 and is pleased as punch at getting 17. When I get 17 with my truck I'm PO'ed. Anywise, any and all information is greatly appreciated.

WD, what sort of mileage are you getting with the 97. If I was only getting 17 on the open highway I be PO'ed also. My 03 is seeing 16 to 17 mixed driving leaning toward more city than highway. Really have not put it out on a long trip yet like interstate cross country, other than a Sunday drive back when I had 8K on the odo, I hand calculated 18. 8 mpg that time, and it was mixed driving also leaning more toward highway miles than city or town on a four lane and two lane hwy.

I have a dozen first gwen trucks My #1 , 1993 first gen truck with 5spd ,355 gears,dual wheels gets 21. 5 mpg highway @ 68mph, 2000 rpm on tach between washington dc and nashville. The tn. moutains are steep. I do use the cruise control . If I run 58mph I get about 4 more mpg... .

In heavy down town traffic I get about 14 mpg. I drive with a real heavy foot around town! I should also mention that the pump is turned up and it smokes some at idle and really smokes when I floor it. At cruise it runs clean. I also have 190 piers injectors in it. It would get better mph if the pump had been left stock... ...

I get about 17 to 19 on in town driving. When it hits around 40 below or more I drop down to about 15. 5 to 17. During the summer like now on a trip to Anchorage I will average a little better than 20. Best ever was 21. 799.

I have new tires on the truck so it will get a little worse milage.

Just got back form a trip from VA to CT. While there, had fun smoking people that needed it, and a pretty good mix of highway and city miles. Avg calculated was 22. 5 and I thought it would be less, based on how heavy on the throttle I was. truck has settled in at 55k miles, and last ten tanks haven't been under 20mpg, all calculated and mixed driving. I bet it would go 24, if I drove 60mph and steady highway miles.

Yes that is correct I get a range from 9-20 depending on how I drive it and how it is loaded.

I guess I got the best one made in 03... . just returned to Georgia from NY State... . 2298 miles round trip with a 1000# Harley in the back. Average mileage per the computer was 18. 9 traveling @ 65 on cruise all the way. The best ever was a trip to Melborne, Fl and back... 721 miles round trip. Full to the top when leaving. Fill up opon return took 25. 4 gallons - 28. 4MPG. Just the truck and me and traveling at 45MPH on cruise-flat land. I love my truck!!!

I get 18 - 19 around town, 20+ on the highway at 65 - 70. 12'ish towing at 65. Best tank: 24. 4 with 4 boy scouts in the cab and about 15 back packs in the bed from Boise to McCall, Idaho area and back. These are all hand calc'ed.

Who the hell wants to do 45 MPH on a trip? According to my calculations, you spent 16 hours driving 720 miles, and that's without stopping. If you do 65, you make it in 11 hours, and 75 is 9. 6 hours. You basically turned a five hour trip, one way, into an all day ordeal. I'd die if I had to drive that slow. I won't mention a short fill either.

My 03 in sig. can get on a good day With Traffic 22-23 mpg. I drive to and from Vermont 210 miles. (on weekends) It is very hard to drive slow so if there is traffic I can get better mileage. Oo.

Just returned from a 2375 mile trip. Grants Pass Oregon to Chico Ca. Chico to Las Vegas Nv. Las Vegas to Huntington Beach Ca. Huntington to Grants Pass.



70 mph = 17. 4 with truck loaded for 3 people, ice chest, camper shell and min city driving. Bumper to bumper grid lock in the LA area. I feel if I would have kept it a bit under 70, I could have hit 18 or higher. Im very happy with my mileage! My 97 Powerstroke would have got me about 12

I have a 03 2500 4x4 HO and get 17 around town, 17 at 75 mph, 19 at 65mph, and 21 at 55 mph. . I also pull 15,000 lbs and get 12 mpg. . Although I do have a Banks 6 gun. Mileage seemed the same prior to the banks 6 gun, but once rolling I seldom have to downshift. For what it's worth. . )

'03 SO with auto, 3. 73 rear. I have 62k on it and have been averaging 17mpg. That's about 75% rolling hills freeway and 25% horrible city driving. Cruise control at about 65mph is best, but tough to do on those long stretches...

Best ever for me was at 70 +/- on a trip from SF Bay area to Tahoe and back. Filled up before and after at the same pump in the same way. I made 19. 6 mpg for the trip, using cruise almost the whole way. At the time my truck had 11k miles with BFG 285's at max pressure.



Now I run Toyo 35's at comfortable pressures, and average about 16mpg. Sometimes I can eek out almost 17 on the highway, but not often. I have 29k on it now.



I really don't care much, as it's far better than a gasser. My pop's '96 1500 w/ a Magnum gets 11-12mpg on the same routes.

I have a few ?'s on the milage people are getting vs what I am getting. My last fill up was 13. 6 based on hand calculation and 14. 5 on the overhead. I did Tow about 10k lbs for about 40 miles of this tank. Now I see everyone here getting pretty good milage probably an avarage of 17mpg. I also see that most people have exhaust, intake, and chips and bigger tires. Is this what is helping people get better milage out of their trucks? I have put on 285's load range D tires on and don't see anything better milage wise.



So here are my ?'s



1. Does the chip, exhaust, intake and/or bigger tires help that much?



2. Does putting on my 285's show based on hand calc. and overhead a lower mpg due to not having the truck calibrated for the bigger tire size, and how would I correct the calculation?



Also I have tried the driving slow and keep the rpm's below 1700 and this did help on the highway(got 18. 9 on the way to work), but the city driving kills it.

Yes. You are travelling more miles than your odometer is telling you if have not recalibrated for the 285s. When I went to 285s and before I recalibrated the error was 4. 28%



In my case, to correct the calculation I would multiply the miles I hade done by 1. 0428.
