What kind of locker rear and how much should it cost?

The local Spicer Distributor and repair place recommended a Detroit locker to replace my one wheel drive factory LSD. The fellow at the counter said he has had one on a one ton Ford for quite awhile and likes it. He also mentioned that the carrier could be damaged by continuing to drive a bad LSD. He said around $700 for the new differential guts. I will have a quote later this morning on the whole job cost and will follow up with that info. In the past I have had three u joints replaced (110K on truck now), two rear and one center. This same fellow quoted $25 apiece for new spicer sealed U joints. He said that the sealed ones run a tighter tolerance. Since it is all going to be apart they agreed to install a center bearing I picked up at the stealer ($96, body shop discount). All this is being done to get rid of that terrible bounce that comes on around 35 mph and seems to get worse with a light load (going up hill). I did a search and found quite a few references to this drive line anomaly, most addressed the u joints and center bearing while a couple of you replaced carrier bearings in the diff. I figured that the Spicer repair people should be able to find any problems in the pumpkin by forcing them to remove the old faulty LSD and replace it with better than OEM aftermarket. I have to agree with someone else's post - I almost hate my truck because of it (but then I turn on the heated seat, turn up the stereo, and mash my right foot down).

Well, It's been all week and the truck is still at the Spicer distributor repair shop. TDR members were right (that is no surprise) about not having a Detroit Locker available for the 80 - 3. 54. After talking with the tech some more, I decided to have the clutches replaced with new and shims installed at each end of the pack. When they took it apart they found two things, bad carrier bearings on both sides and the clutch pack assembled wrong from the factory (is there any recourse for this?). They replaced both carrier bearings and the pinion bearing while they were in there. They did not replace the outside bearings on the axle. (should they have?). Neither carrier bearing had spun. They were torn up though. The tech told me that the 80, unlike the 70, has shims to keep the bearings off the housing. Not quite so disastrous if you spin a bearing. He did insist on using 6 ounces of friction modifier, two ounces smeared on the clutch pack components during assembly and 4 more in the diff with 75-140 synthetic lube. He said the pack was going to be very tight and needed at least this much( I'll see). I hope this solves my rearend shake problem. It only shook when the rear was totally warmed up with a slight load (like going up hill). I learned allot this week while searching and reading rear end threads. Great input from all 14k of you.

Hope it works out for you.

Our LSDs are the best on the market, from what I have seen, Detroit, is the next step, or an ARB air locker.

The rest are tinker toys.

Back here, wesoak the clutch packs in the modifier before assembly.

Hope they didn't soak you too bad, and you can get a Detroit for the 3:54.

detroit

So, are you seying that a detroit locker IS available for the Dana 80's? I have 3. 54's now, but I want to put 4. 10's in it anyway so this would be a good way to kill two birds with one stone:D
