Need Different 1991 5 Speed Manual Transmission

Question For Experienced Twinners

I just put an Edge Comp on other wise Stock '01 duallie, 3:55 gears, NO GUAGES yet, K&N filter.

Can anyone tell what power and fuel levels I can run safely, without monitoring guages, and not melt engine, turbo, transmission?

Solo and Towing please. Tow a bumper pull 7200# horse trailer... (it was SUPPOSED to be under 5K WITH horses... they lie worse than C/D. . )

Tonite, I funally got the balls (or enough beer) to kick in 5X5 for a couple minutes up a long grade. I actually clicked the box off, and then back on, just to prove to myself I was not imagining the power performance improvement... . got it used for 3 bills too, what a freaking deal.

Thx to all that reply.

I have comp pro installed with no pump wire tap. No problems for heat, but the transmission doesn't like it! Get torque converter and valvebody first if you have automatic.

Ditto on the above.

Fuel Pressure gauge is critical. There is no safe level if you cant verify at least 10 psi to the VP. (Its kind of like having a checking account and not being able to see your balance. )

The EGT gauge to make sure you dont melt a piston or cause damage to exhaust components while towing through the hills.

Boost gauge isnt as critical, but should add to the package.

Harden the transmission while its still in good condition.

An exhaust brake for towing is also a must have.

Yup - gotta have gauges to verify operation of mods up in the Comp class and above...

That said, on my otherwise unmodded truck, I was able to run the Comp on 5x5, even in the longest, steepest hills towing our 24 foot Kit 5er - a GCW of about 15,000.

(EDIT!) OOPS, forgot the added Carter pusher pump - also a must with the Comp in higher settings!

I added the stuff listed in my sig - except the Smarty - and still could do the same thing. But the Smarty has put me over the edge, and I now have to turn the Comp back to 1 or 2 on all sublevels - thus, 5x1 appears to be my max allowable Comp setting to keep EGT in the safe range - but will know more when we get the trailer out in a few more weeks...

. . when you say 10 psi to vp, can that be checked in garage sitting and running through rpms, or will that change in actual on the road? I have a fuel presure test gauge kit, just not mounted to run with truck.

Also, that 10 PSI, under load? Mine is about 10-12 at idle, drops to maybe 5 running rpms up.

Also, a diesel shop told me that the "new proper" way to check lift pump to vp output is by measuring fuel vlume pumped in a specific time, more worriesome than pressure... ever hear that one before?

Thx

I would be VERY careful until you can monitor the FP on that truck during various driving conditions. If you are pulling that pressure down to 5 psi without a load, you may find situations where you are starving the VP-44 for fuel. Do some forum searches on the topics of lift pump, low fuel pressure, and VP-44 failures. There is a lot of information available for you to read.

. . gonna get all the guages, just wondering what I can run now without, or not at all, since I came upon the box used before the other mods.

... but with the box staring at you, it is tough to NOT turn it on.....

... thanks, the pressure seems to be within "acceptable factory", but from what I read, low for what is needed, and definitly low for adding the box... ... it is hard to remember all the stats and separate from the (opinions), from all the stuff I have read...
