At work I have an 85 GMC 7000 with the 8. 2 Detroit and and have had no problems with it, it tips the scales at over 15,000 LBS. It does not get plugged in at all and will allways start even when it is 10 below zero.
I couldn't tell you what the rebuild cost each time, but I do know he always had the Chevrolete garage do it. Sounds like If it were me I would rather go with the $1500 truck if it is comparable and if you had to sink another $2400 you would be even. If you have to sink another $2400 in the $3900 truck you've got big bucks in that truck. The Dt466 has a little more power and is cheap to rebuild! It might be a good way to go also. There is probably a reason why the guy has an extra rearend and trans to go with it. Probably like people I know that buy whole trucks for the MOTOR and have the trans. and rear they haven't consumed yet. ???????????
Gene, a GM with a Deutz?? What is the deal with that? Never heard of a Deutz in a GM truck.
There is a guy who brings his Ford F-350 with 5 cylinder air cooled Deutz to the steam show now and then. He says it gets about 25 miles to the gallon, but is gutless. He had to put a heat exchanger on the oil cooler somehow to get hot water for his heater.
