Popping out of exhaust is that as in noise, as in may be backfire?
If your cat was clogging up it would be black smoke I believe.

Governor should not have any involvement with what is happening. Governor cuts back fuel supply, this only keeps your engine/truck going faster.
I will have to dwell on the pop for a while but sounds like backfire.

missouri,
Yea it sounds like a backfire. It cannot be my cat because he is gone. It is really anoying because it sounds like s$#t.

I was wondering if anyone else has this same problem? When i throttle my truck up playin around, about 2400rpm it starts to pop out of my exaust. I did not notice it until i stright piped it. It puffs a little white smoke to when it does it. If it just my govener. I thought it was governed at 2800?
well thanks

piers,
yes it does do it more when it is cold, but it still does it after a 3 hour trip. It is worse when i romp it but when I gradually bring it up it does it an a higher rpm.
Is the timming something that I can do easily?
Thanks

It's sounding more & more like timing is the culprit. If you don't have the timing kit I wouldn't reccomend doing this job yourself. What is the CPL # of your truck? If it is CPL#1968 have your timing set to 4. 7mm lift, that equals 15 degrees. If you have a CPL# of 1549,1550,1551,1552,1553,1815,1816,1959 or 1839 have it set to 6. 2mm lift that also equals 15 degrees.

My pops if it is cold and I jump on it. But after it is warm you can hear when the governer hits but it isn't a pop noise.

piers,
Thanks alot for your help. From what i read you are suspost to be the man. Will this timming change help my performance out any?
Thanks again

Does it do this more cold than hot? If you slowly bring up the rpm's does it do it or just if you romp on it? Sounds to me like your timing may be retarded.

piers,
I called the cummins dealer about this timming and they did not want to talk about abything but stock. Them I called one of the diesel shops that have bosch logos in their ads. They sais that they have never heard of doing that? I guess in other words he just did not have a clue how to do it.
Were you talking about the timming like with the gear on the front of the pump or the plunger hight timming? I'm still tring to learn the bosch pumps. What is the part number of the timming kit? I'm not to worried with the depth of the work involved in doing this my dad has worked with Cat diesels and heavy equipment for 30+ years and I have been in it for a couple now.
Thanks so much

Big Yellow, here you go for the tools, timing involves changing gear position on the shaft while the #1 plunger is in the correct position. It is rather easy, but requires special tools, some of which you may already have.

Yep, better throttle response, less cold morning smoke & generally a fuel mileage improvement #ad
