Same experience as you, Kmac. I tow a 20K trailer, plus about 8K for the truck. at 60 mph, I get around 10mpg. 65 mph, 9 mpg. At 70 mph, 8. 0mpg. With this much weight, speed seems to really hurt.
My truck is heavily bombed, and can get 20 mpg on the highway (empty), but if you use the power in reserve for towing, your mileage will suffer. This should be no surprise. There's no free lunch, and if you're moving a lot of weight, pushing a lot of wind (speed), it hurts. All most of us are doing is adding fuel with our bombs. You only pay the penalty if you use the extra fuel needed to go faster, top the hill at 70, accelerate faster, etc. Most of these bombs do little to dramatically change the efficiency of the engine, so if you use your new found power to do more work, you burn more fuel.
All in all, though, these engines are very, very efficient and are capable of soooo much power. You gotta love it.
