I have a 1996 one ton cummings dually. I am looking for advice on replacing old tires. I now have Goodyear LT215-85R-16. I would like to buy LT235-85R-16. I do not know if I will have sidewall clearance on the rear dual tires. Any suggestions on tire size or brand???? My truck has 12,000 miles on it, I'm replacing tires due to side walls rotting.

Tires

I have 235/85- R16 on my truck and there is plenty of clearence. just watch your air pressure. Go for it!

If you're seaking of what kind as in brand, I have 3 trucks with Coopers on each. My the 96 has the 235/85R/16 on it as has 3/4 to 1 inch between rear tires. Tracks well and rides very good. I have read some post that was not very complimentary of the Cooper. I am impressed.

Good choice.

12,000 miles on a 1996! I would buy the cheapest tires I could find. Watch the ads in the Sunday paper for Sears Scorpion or check at Costco or Sam's. Take the money you save and buy some covers for the tires to keep the sun off them so they won't rot.

I would look into B. F. Goodrich they have some of the strongest sidewalls in the business, also as Turbo Thom stated Cooper makes a fine tire, another to look at is Toyo.

My $. 02 on tires is this:

Don't buy the cheapest things you can buy. Many tire dealers can choose from rubber grades, steel belting grades, etc. The stuff that doesn't make "A" grade for the name brand guys (Michelin, Kelly, Bridgestone, Etc. ) goes to the "private" brand guy. Namely these are tires (and I won't name them) made by national companies but with cheaper quality materials.

Consider a 7. 50R16 radial tire as an option to the 235/85R16. They have the same height, a similar load capacity, and dual spacing is much better. My first CTD was a 93 Club Cab Dually. After the factory Goodyears wore out, I switched to 7. 50R16 Bridgestone VSX's. They had a 10 ply or even a 14 (!) ply option. I elected to use 10 ply's and they still looked great after 60K when I sold the truck. The only drawback to this size is that they will be harder to find. But if you carry a heavy load and dual spacing worries you (it should), consider this as an option.
