What Oil Filter..........

There is a listing in the latest issue of the TDR to which oil filters are approved to be used. I noticed that no Wix (NAPA), Fram, or many other popular brands are mentioned. For that matter the two Fleetguard filters I use here at the bus garage are not mentioned as approved



I use the LF3970 for the 24 valve... .....

The LF3349 for the 12 valve, including my truck's engine. Neither of these two are mentioned as approved. Yet, it's what the dealer sells.



From reading the article you get no clear idea as if all filters mentioned as approved will work on all applications. Nor does it give a specific year when or if things were changed i. e. 2001 to 2003. Isn't there a 2002 model year engine



It listed the following Fleetguard filters; (for 89 to 01 engines)

LF3894

LF3552

LF3959



The following are suited for the 03-04. 5 model engines;

LF16035

LF3972

... these having the fluted canister, which cost more!! I don't need no flute! Ya ain't supposta nighten it down to 88 lbs ft anyhow!!!

Whats wrong with the 3970 and the 3349 that I use? Did the part #'s change?



Is there a big difference in the Standard/Cellulose/StrataPore filters,,,, other than the price BTW, no mention of a "Standard" oil filter, just the high priced Cell and Strata.



Very confusing



PS, my oil samples are in good shape at 16K miles. I must be using a good filter, right??

So I go and measure the thread size of a 12 valve filter base and a 24 valve filter base.



THEY AIN"T THE SAME!!!



Hello!! How can the same filter fit a 12 valve engine AND a 24 valve engine??



Why did the article state that the same filter is used from '89 to '01? Did Dodge specify that the same filter base be used on ALL engines where as the bus industry specified different????

The "standard" filter is the LF 3349... it has a cellulose(paper) element.

The 1st upgrade is the 3552 it uses a microglass element

The next upgrade is the stratopore which is the 3894 I believe. Not sure what the element composition is.



It has to do with filtering efficiency... . how many % of what size particles get filtered.

I learned this from a conversation with a Fleetguard call in technician a few years back.

I don't know about the other numbers or about the differences in thread sizes.

Now at least I'm admitting that and not writing an article about it.

I do remember from several years ago, that the filter housings on the 24V engines vary from the Dodge to non-Dodge apps. So that explains the difference in your threads.



I had been running the LF3894 on my 91, until Cummins Gateway informed me the price was $15!!!!!! Good god; that is ridiculous- it was $8. 50 a few months ago. I am not buying anything from those crooks again. Just have ot save the cash to make it worth it to buy a case from Geno's. For now, I am running the standard Donaldson. Cheaper than Wix, and probably just as good- it's all paper, anyway.



The cellulose filters are 90% efficient in the 30micron range; 30% in the 10micron size. Stratopore and Microglass are 100% @30 micron; 60% @ 10micron. Or that is what I have read. THere was a close up picture of them in an issue 2-3 years ago, and the stratopore had the most even medium. I have noticed in Mom's pickup that with a cellulose filter, the oil starts to darken a little sooner than with the microglass/ stratopore, though that could be due to several factors, I guess.

I use the Fleetgard lf3959 on mine. That is what the kenworth parts guy came up with. The previous owner used Fram.

I just use the one for the '02 on the site ---- LF3959 I buy 3 fuel and oil filters at a time to save on shipping ... . its not like they exspire or anything

Like Daniel said, Dodge applications may be different from others. Dodge probably wanted to stay with one filter for the whole run.

Yeah, I guess they are good for something... . thats where I get my filters. Remember you can go forward but not backwards. Use a 02 filter on your 89, but not a 89 filter on your 02.
