I was at the dealer today getting some stuff done so I picked their brains a little. When they get a truck in that's used for towing, they put in a 75-140. I think they said it even comes in a Mopar bottle, so warranty is not an issue. I told them I use Amsoil and they seemed to be very inpressed with Amsoil. Said something like it exceeds Mopar spec for the 75-90 and might eliminate the need for 75-140. I' m not real sure on the specs though. Maybe one of the Amsoil guys here can chime in with a little info.

These are the Specs. for the Amsoil 75W-90.

API GL-5 & MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234 (Formerly Eaton PS-037) for 250,000 miles, Mack GO-J, Arvin/Meritor 0-76N, plus hypoid gear oil specifications from all foreign and domestic manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Daimler Chrysler. Can also be used in rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended.

Vertually the same! ;)

miles between changes

are you guys that are running synthetic go longer between changes or following the 15,000 mile recommendation? i now have 22,000 miles on my truck and havn't changed the fluid yet. i think i'm going to amsoil. i have a oil change pump for my I/O in my boat i'll use to suck out the oil. eventually i'll get the mag-hytec covers... . james :D

James,

Yes I am going longer than 15K. I changed my diffs at 2K and will change them again at 30K. It is so much easier to change the fluid now with the reusable gasket. If you haven't changed the factory fluid yet, I would pull the covers off and check/clean them out rather than just changing the fluid.

The spec calls for full synthetic and 15K miles change intervals. On the Amsoil, there have been a few people that had problems with rear end noise using the Amsoil 2000 75/90, once removed the noise went away. I would use Mobil1, no one has reported having any problems with that oil.

Well then, I'll be the first. No more problems with Mobile than any other, I had the same howl with Mobile as I did with Cenex. Only thing that got rid of it for me was overfilling, and I'm not sure I like that idea either.

Wayne, is there any benefit to using the 75-140 if the specs are so close? I don't have enought 75-90 for another change so I'll have to order some anyway, might just as well be the 140 if it'll do any good. I tow heavy a lot.

My last truck, a 94' CDT 4X4 3/4 ton, I had Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 in both differentials the entire time I owned it, which was 150,000 miles. At 60,000, I had the rear differental fluid analyzed, and the report came back stating it was as good as new. Viscosity was still the same as when installed, and there was very little wear. The lube was still in it when I sold it at 150,000 miles. I never had ANY problems with noise or anything else.

The 3rd gen trucks do not have Dana axles like the '94 you had, they also have a totally different type of LS which is much more sensitive to oil types than the simple friction type LS that was in the Danas. This is one of reasons for the full synthetic requirement.

I think it is worth mentioning that I have not heard of anyone not having gear noise, changeing the oil and then developing a noise which then went away once the oil was changed again to another brand with any other oil than Amsoil series 2000.

I realize the 2nd Gen and the 3rd Gen have different axles, as well as Limited Slip. I am using the "Full Synthetic" in the 3rd Gen as well, and I still don't have any noises. :)

I use Valvoline Synpower 75W-90. Change every 15k just to maintain warranty (although my aftermarket bedliner probably voided my axle warranty). After 60k I'll start experimenting with a new change interval.
